Burning Midnight Author Will McIntosh On Telling A Good Story

It’s no secret that I really love Will McIntosh’s books: I count Soft Apocalypse as one of my absolute favorite novels, and I was a big fan of Defenders. His latest novel Burning Midnight is now out, and it’s a strange, excellent book about the wonders of collecting and otherworldly horror. We had a chance to chat with McIntosh about his latest book, and what went into it (and his other novels)

Your latest novel, Burning Midnight is in stores now, and follows a teenager and some fantastic spheres. It’s a plot that’s out there - how did you put it together?

I wanted to explore the fever and excitement people feel when trying to acquire rare objects, whether it’s fine art, Pokemon cards, autographs, jewels, or MIB (mint in box) Star Wars action figures. I’ve collected one thing or another since I was a kid. As a teen I had a business selling rare comics, and I published an academic paper laying out a theory of why people collect back when I still a psych professor. I’m fascinated by that weird, hungry high you get hunting for rarities, and eventually it was bound to come out in my fiction.

http://www.amazon.com/Burning-Midnig...

I’m pretty sure the idea for Burning Midnight came most directly from an experience I had when I was twelve. My sister, a cousin, and I stumbled on a 60 year-old dump in the woods. We spent the summer hunting for antique bottles, and built a collection of something like 200 bottles (and eventually sold them to an antique dealer). Those great memories led me to want to create a story about hunting and discovering incredibly valuable things in the wild.

Burning Midnight Author Will McIntosh On Telling A Good Story

Since your first novel, Soft Apocalypse in 2011, you’ve written five novels. What have you learned since that first book up through Burning Midnight?

Ha, some people think Soft A is my best work, so I may have learned nothing, but let’s assume I have…

1. Try out your novel ideas as shorter works first. I may be the only writer who benefits from doing this, but a few times I’ve gotten excited by an idea, dove into chapter one of a novel, and two months later discover I’m writing crap. Sometimes something seems like a great idea when it’s in my head, but on paper it just doesn’t work. I’m better off spending a week writing a short story, then my treasured critiquing friends can tell me it’s bad, and I can move on.

2. Have some semblance of an outline. I was a pantser early on, and it led to so much revision. I probably rewrote 50% of Soft Apocalypse. For Burning Midnight, it was more like 10%. Often I only have a rough idea of what’s going to happen, but I have some idea of what the beginning, middle, and end will look like.

3. If you’re a new author, try to stick to one genre. I followed up Soft Apocalypse with Hitchers, which was urban fantasy/horror. Not many people who wanted to read about a relatively realistic apocalypse also wanted to read about a half million people possessed by their dead friends and relatives, so not many readers followed from my first book to my second. I’m mostly interested in exploring near-future SF anyway, so I’m happy to stick to SF for now.

What prompted you to make the jump from an ‘adult’ novel to a YA one? What in Burning Midnight required the jump in style, and did your approach change at all?

Burning Midnight Author Will McIntosh On Telling A Good Story

It was more like I tripped and fell, rather than jumped. Burning Midnight started out as an adult novel. I was about a third of the way through the first draft when I felt like there was something odd about the book. I didn’t know what, so I emailed my agent, Seth Fishman, and told him I was going to have to rethink the book, because it was feeling too….I struggled to describe it…it felt almost like YA. And Seth responded about ten seconds later. So write it as YA! I was kind of stunned by his reply, because I wasn’t a YA writer. I didn’t know anything about writing YA. Then I realized that I’d read a few YA books without even realizing they were YA. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, for example. The only change I had to make to the draft in progress was to make the characters younger. Initially they were college students, and I changed them to high school students. That’s about it. I write in a pretty straightforward style anyway (some of my writing friends would say I’m not a stylemonkey), so I think my writing lends itself to YA.

Something that I’ve noticed in your books is your unique take on genre: you seem to come in from a 90 degree angle. Soft Apocalypse was a different take on the post-apocalyptic genre, while Defenders had its own unique take on invasion literature. Do you feel that you’re consciously twisting genre conventions?

I had to think this one over for a while. When it comes to writing fiction I try not to do much of anything consciously, beyond telling a good story. Themes, social commentary, I like to let all of that emerge on its own out of the story. That being said, when it comes to developing the initial ideas for books, I can recall instances of thinking very consciously about doing just what you said – striving for a unique take.

In Soft Apocalypse, which began as a short story, I wanted to basically drop a character similar to Rob Gordon from High Fidelity into an apocalypse. Apocalypses tend to be about people bucking up and surviving. But people would still cling to the important aspects of their old lives, especially if the apocalypse came slowly. So I had this lonely guy looking for love as he steps over corpses.

The other one you mention is Defenders, and I can remember planning the short story and thinking it would be interesting to create a situation where it turns out the invading aliens are not the problem, it’s the weapons we created to fight them.

Burning Midnight Author Will McIntosh On Telling A Good Story

Your next novel, Fallers, is due out later this year, about a world in which everyone’s lost their memories. What has you excited about this novel?

Everyone losing their memories my well be the least strange aspect of Faller! The book opens with a guy regaining consciousness in downtown Manhattan with no memory. He spots a crowd of people and goes to see what they’re all staring at, and it turns out they’re looking at this enormous sky, because they’re all standing on ten blocks of downtown Manhattan hanging suspended in an endless sky. The guy finds three things in his pockets: a toy paratrooper, a sketch drawn in his own blood, and a photo of him and a woman. Based on the paratrooper he fashions a parachute, and falls off the chip of city and finds…another chip. It’s a weird, wild book, and I’m hoping people will find it kind of different.

What’s coming up next for you after 2016?

I *may* have just sold a Middle Grades book about robot bodyguards built to resemble animals to a major publisher, but that’s unofficial. : ) I’m currently at work on another YA book. It’s about lying, about all the ways we’re lied to, all the lies we tell, and what would happen if no one could ever get away with a lie again. I so want to call it The Future Will Be Bullshit-Free, but that may not be the best title for a YA book. I’m also developing an outline for a screenplay. I’ve always wanted to write a screenplay.

Burning Midnight is now in stores.

Mike Winkelmann Has Spent The Last Decade Drawing An Image A Day

Recently, we pointed to the debut Journal of Science Fiction’s first issue, and we were struck in particular by Mike Winkelmann’s artwork featured on the front cover.

We chatted with Winkelmann about what goes into his work.

You have been working on art every day for 9 years. What have you learned by doing a painting a day?

Besides the actual technical skills that I have learned along the way, I have learned a ton about how to complete projects and stick with something. Everydays are a great way to take a big project and break it down into smaller pieces to ensure that you stick with it. It’s also a great way to get shitty ideas out of your head because you can quickly try something and see if there is anything really there. I think it also helps with completing work and putting out your work as that’s something a lot of people really struggle with.

How do you put together a painting? What tools do you use?

Every year I pick a new set of skills to focus on and try to improve. In the past I’ve done drawings, digital photography, vector illustration, etc. Right now though the main tool that I use is Cinema4D. It’s a 3D animation program similiar to what is used to make the special effects in movies etc. I basically start out with a blank ‘canvas’ and first model out all of the things I want in the scene, wether that’s a landscape or building, or giant robot thing. Then I add materials to make things look like dirt or metal etc. Then you light the scene using lights or simulated skies to give it the look you want. After rendering it out I usually take it into Photoshop to add any sort of final small details and color correction.

What do you use for inspiration, and how do you keep finding new ideas after 9 years?

There is so much amazing work out there, to me it’s not a matter of finding inspiration, it’s almost a matter of not drowning in it. I feel like it can be overwhelming at times when you’re flipping though Tumblr, Behance, or Instagram and you are just inundated with amazing work. As far as finding new ideas though, I think that is the beauty of having a deadline everyday — SOMETHING will come out. It will most likely be total crap, but it’s something and sometimes getting those shitty ideas out is just as important. I also think people have more ideas in them than they realize, and I think the more you get into a rhythm with it, the less scary or concerned you come with coming up with something “TOTALLY BRILLIANT” everyday. I think good ideas are fleshed out over much longer periods of time and work.

What inspires your work? Are there any particular artists that you look to?

Right now I’m inspired a lot by these sort of sci-fi futuristic landscapes. This is something fairly new as much of my previous work was much more abstract. In terms of the sci-fi images that I’ve been creating, there are so many artists, it’s hard to even keep track of all of them. I find it fascinating how much insanely good, intricate work is created as a BYPRODUCT of making a video game or feature film and that work is never ‘directly’ seen by most people.

Your science fictional works feature major floating objects. What’s the appeal there?

Haha, honestly I don’t know. I think there is something I find appealing about a vision of the future that has these gigantic, lumbering machines floating in the air silently doing our bidding. I think it would be cool to look over the horizon one day and see these giant mundane beasts slowly floating around, quietly doing whatever boring tasks they are programmed to do.

Do you have any one favorite image that you’ve put together in your collection?

Hmmmm, honestly not really. I have certain ones that I know represented some small breakthrough or a new technique I’ve never tried, but I look at the images as more of a byproduct of learning that the end product. I’m not really setting out to necessarily make a SUPER SWEET picture each day, I’m just trying to suck a tiny bit less.

Here’s a couple of selections from his years of work:

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Gets An Epic Retro Makeover

Here’s a version of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice that I’d enjoy watching. Someone went and set footage from the Adam West, George Reeves and Lynda Carter Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman shows and it works wonderfully.

Seriously, how awesome would a crossover show have been back when these shows were all on the air? This is largely rhetorical, given that Batman aired in 1966, The Adventures of Superman aired in 1952, and Wonder Woman aired in 1975. Today, with shows like The Flash, Arrow, Constantine and Supergirl all crossing over in various ways, it seems like it would have been a no brainer.

SpaceX Is Gearing Up To Build Lots and Lots of New Rockets

It’s been a few really good months for SpaceX, and now, the commercial spaceflight company is kicking rocket production into high gear in anticipation of a packed launch schedule.

Speaking on Thursday at the Federal Aviation Administration’s Commercial Space Transportation Conference, SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell explained that the company was transitioning from testing and development of its Falcon 9 rocket cores to mass production.

“Now we’re in this factory transformation to go from building six or eight a year to about 18 cores a year. By the end of this year we should be at over 30 cores per year,” Shotwell said. “So you see the factory start to morph.”

SpaceX has not yet announced a date for its next launch, which will carry the SES-9 communications satellite into orbit, but Shotwell indicated that the launch would be taking place within the next several weeks. After that, the company could be flying missions “every two to three weeks”.

Meanwhile, crewed Falcon 9 flights are still on track to begin next year, with an in-flight test of the Crew Dragon spacecraft’s launch escape system set to take place before the end of 2016. This first-of-its-kind failsafe system will allow the crew capsule to separate during ascent in event of a booster failure on the way to orbit.

Development of the Falcon Heavy rocket is still underway. When the first Falcon Heavy launches later this year, it’ll be the most powerful rocket on Earth by a factor of two, capable of lifting over 53 metric tons of mass into orbit.

Exciting times we live in.

Respawn Entertainment is Developing a Titanfall TV Series

A sequel to 2014's Titanfall, Respawn’s multiplayer mech game, has been in the works, but it looks like we could be getting more than an additional game. Speaking to Forbes Magazine, the game’s lead writer, Jesse Stern, confirmed that they were working on a spinoff TV show.

In the interview, Sterns confirmed that Titanfall 2 would have a dedicated single player campaign, and that the studio was partnering with Lionsgate TV to develop a television series.

Stern misses the daily buzz of working on episodic TV and is developing a number of projects including a series spin-off of Titanfall with Respawn in partnership with Lionsgate TV.

A Titanfall TV series would be off the hook. The story in the game follows a war between splintered colonies far out in space, with giant mechs used in battle.

Whether or not this is actually practical for an episodic television series, we’ll have to see, but it would be really cool to watch. Either way, getting a single player campaign would be excellent as well.

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and that means football, food and commercials. It also means movie previews and two of the first to air were for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

However, these weren’t just your straightforward trailers. These were commercials for Turkish Airlines, who have a promotional deal with the film. Each commercial is an ad to take a vacation in either Gotham City, with full Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne cameo, or Metropolis, with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. There are even some Easter Eggs in there too. Ace Chemicals is in there, for one. What else can you catch?

New York's Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Is Leaking, But You Shouldn't Freak Out

New York's Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Is Leaking, But You Shouldn't Freak Out

Buchanan New York’s Indian Point Energy Center, a three-unit reactor power plant, reported yesterday afternoon that radioactive tritium has been detected in groundwater testing wells near the facility.

Three groundwater monitoring wells surrounding the plant have reported radioactive samples. Despite the discovery at the site, the risk to the public in this instance is low: the discovery is far removed from drinking water systems. That said, tritiated water is often diluted and routinely released from nuclear power plants.

According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, “tritium emits a weak form of radiation, a low-energy beta particle similar to an electron. The tritium radiation does not travel very far in air and cannot penetrate the skin.”

Instead of a single proton and neutron, Tritium has a proton and two neutrons. As it decays, beta particles travel only about 6 millimeters, and can’t penetrate human skin. However, if it is inhaled or more often, ingested, it can present a radiation hazard. This can be worrisome, because tritium can bond with oxygen to form water molecules: because of its chemical structure, it can’t be filtered out, hence the dilution.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office released a statement that emphasized that the leak didn’t post a threat to the public:

Our first concern is for the health and safety of the residents close to the facility and ensuring the groundwater leak ‎does not pose a threat.

This latest failure at Indian Point is unacceptable and I have directed Department of Environmental Conservation Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos and Department of Health Commissioner Howard Zucker to fully investigate this incident and employ all available measures, including working with Nuclear Regulatory Commission, to determine the extent of the release, its likely duration, cause and potential impacts to the environment and public health.

Entergy also issued a statement, downplaying any risk to the public, and noted that they had reported the leak to authorities:

While elevated tritium in the ground onsite is not in accordance with our standards, there is no health or safety consequence to the public, and releases are more than a thousand times below federal permissible limits. The tritium did not affect any source of drinking water onsite or offsite.

While the effect of these elevated values is less than one-tenth of one percent of federal reporting guidelines, Entergy made voluntary notification to the NRC, state agencies and key stakeholders.

After the revelations that the water systems of Flint, Michigan and other major cities across the United States have serious issues with lead and other heavy metals, there’s a real concern when it comes to public infrastructure.

Several of Entergy’s nuclear plants have experienced similar leaks of radioactive tritium: The Vermont Department of Health has noted ongoing investigations into leaks at Vermont Yankee since 2010, while New York’s FitzPatrick Plant has been “plagued by water leaks” in 2014.

The Indian Point facility is owned by the Entergy Corporation, which operates ten nuclear power plants across the United States. Several of its plants in the Northeast, including Vermont’s Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, Massachusetts’ Pilgrim Nuclear Generating Station and New York’s James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant have closed or are slated for closure, due in part to increased competition with cheaper oil and natural gas energy supplies.

As nuclear power has become less competitive with other energy sources, they are becoming less profitable as they become more expensive to maintain.

While Entergy has been motivated to close down its power plants due to increased competition from other energy sources, many of the plants under its control are have reached the ends of their forty-year licenses: Indian Point’s Units 1, 2 and 3 were activated in 1962, 1974 and 1976, respectively, while the Fitzpatrick plant was brought online in 1975. Pilgrim and Vermont Yankee were brought online in 1972.

These plants are facing more expensive upkeep in the years ahead, and that pressure has pushed the company to begin shutting down their nuclear plants. While Indian Point has had a decent service record over its history, Governor Cuomo has called for the plant to close as of late last year.

In the meantime, an investigation has been launched into the leaks. While increases in radiation have been detected in three (of the forty) groundwater testing wells, these levels still remain below federal safety limits.

In 1996, the Super Bowl commercial for Independence Day blew up the White House and sparked the imaginations of film fans everywhere. 20 years later with the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, another Super Bowl commercial was inevitable. And here it is.

While this spot probably won’t be as buzzy as the one twenty years ago, it’s still a nice piece of historic symmetry. Especially with Jeff Goldblum’s line “What goes up, must come down.”

Co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day: Resurgence opens June 24. Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner return alongside new cast members Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Joey King and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
