The X-Men: Apocalypse Super Bowl spot really focuses on the “apocalypse” part of the title. Both the character and the general levels of destruction the X-Men are totally failing to prevent.

Bus Explosion Scares Londoners Who Don't Know It's a Movie Stunt
Yesterday Londoners got a fright when they saw a double-decker bus explode on a bridge over the Thames River. Some people immediately thought it was a terrorist attack. Thankfully it was just a scene for a new movie starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan.
Production crews attempted to give some residents in the area warning that they were filming a movie, titled The Foreigner. But some people took to social media to complain that there weren’t adequate procedures in place to let everyone know that this was all a movie stunt.
The visibility of this bridge to so many people in London can make giving proper notification difficult. That being said, simply saying that a bridge will be closed arguably isn’t enough warning:
When you live in a place like Los Angeles you more or less get used to streets and buildings being blocked off from the public for movie stunts. And residents are often given warning about the specific nature of the filming so that people aren’t alarmed when they hear gunshots or explosions:
According to IMBD, the tagline for the film is, “The IRA took his family. The police looked the other way. Now he must get revenge.” Perhaps next time the producers will think about shooting the bus scene on a studio in front of a green screen.

Here's the Alien Revenge Plan from Independence Day: Resurgence
Unlike almost every other movie commercial released yesterday, Independence Day: Resurgence actually packed its with some new footage. And an explanation of the way the aliens are going to get back at us. It is, of course, completely absurd.
I just want to point out that capping off a performance of the American National Anthem, at a sporting event, with a bunch of alien ships attacking the flyover, during the Super Bowl commercial is the most Independence Day thing ever.
Anyway, that shot easily fades into a space battle between the aliens and us. It looks like this battle is happening above one of the alien motherships—which is much larger than the saucers from the first movie.
It’s cut so that we see Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth), in an Earth Space Defense spacesuit, piloting a ship. Since he starts the film as a hotshot pilot who messed up and was sent to the moon to drive a space forklift as punishment, I think it’s safe to say he redeems himself and ends up back in a ship. As if there was any doubt.
“They’re coming back,” says former president Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman). We’ve seen this scene before, with the full line being “I see them in my dreams, they’re coming back.” Which makes it feel like less a pronouncement and more like a nightmare he has.
We’ve seen this shot before, too. But the space battle earlier makes it seem like the crash was caused by our great fighters. Not that the crash doesn’t also cause a lot of damage on Earth.
And this shot of Morrison is also not new but is a reminder that he is the love interest of Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe).
See? Crashing ship is tearing up the planet.
While the first movie had aliens blowing up cities with a single shot from their death laser, Independence Day: Resurgence has them defying gravity to rip cities up from the ground. Maybe after the first movie we shouldn’t have rebuilt any cities, since they make such good targets?
Dylan Dubrow (Jesse Usher) is the stepson of Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and will probably be taking over the job that Smith didn’t come back to do.
Along with chunks of city, I spy an airplane and a ship being hurled at London here. Also, welcome London to the “featured city destroyed by aliens in Independence Day” club. It’s not just America the aliens hate.
In case you didn’t get what was happening, “What comes up must come down,” says David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum). This line and this delivery are so perfectly Independence Day, I can’t stand it. It’s a cliché delivered with all the gravitas and importance as actual information.
Although there is something poetic about lifting up parts of our cities and then chucking them at the rest of them that is poetic.
Poor London Eye.
Anyway, instead of explosions, the aliens are coming after us by picking up things and dropping them on other things. Like so much of what happens in the huge movies, this premise sounds stupid out loud, but looks awesome on screen.
New Trailer for The Lobster Sees Colin Farrell Hunt for Love... Before He Turns Into a Lobster
When we saw The Lobster at Fantastic Fest, we fell in love with its bizarre, but fascinating premise: a dystopian world where people have to find a romantic partner in 45 days, otherwise they turn into an animal. The first trailer for the US release, set for March, is here, and now you can see the almost terrifying absurdity for yourself.
http://io9.gizmodo.com/we-just-saw-th...
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, The Lobster follows Farrell’s David after he checks in to a Hotel (fronted by Broadchurch’s Olivia Coleman) designed for single people to find suitors—and if they don’t do so in 45 days, they’re transformed into the animal (in David’s case, a Lobster) of their choice and freed into the wild. The premise is as weird as it sounds, but seeing it play out played completely straight is kind of strangely scary. There are jokes in the trailer, sure, but the whole, slightly morbid world (and its hatred of single people) is taken disconcertingly seriously, which makes it all the more fascinating.
An Invisible Man Meets His Soul Mate in Sweet Short Film Blue
Born invisible, a young man paints himself blue so that he can be seen and lead a “normal” life that’s actually incredibly, suffocatingly lonely. Until one day... when he catches sight of a woman who’s in a remarkably similar situation. What happens next isn’t entirely surprising, but it’s quite lovely the way it plays out.
Animator Amy Kate Wolf writes of her short film, Blue, that it is “My graduate animation, based on a short extract of Andrew Kaufman’s book All My Friends Are Superheroes.
Do Not Watch This Slo-Mo Video of a Dude Sticking His Tongue in a Mouse Trap
Everything is usually way cooler in slow-motion. An amazing football catch, a kick-ass movie fight scene, a gravity-defying skateboard trick
You can’t help but feel a little sad for the The Slow Mo Guys who have apparently run out of things to shoot or blow up in front of their high-speed camera. But then again, don’t pretend you haven’t always been a little bit curious about what sticking your tongue in a mouse trap might feel like. It turns out, worse than you could have possibly imagined.
For your viewing pleasure, or sharing with your unexpecting friends, we’ve also created a GIF of the entire sequence for you. You’re welcome.

All the Coolest Stuff We Spotted in This Year's Super Bowl Movie Trailers
Yesterday brought us a slew of TV ads for movies. And most of them had at least some thrilling new footage, that gave us our first look at some major scenes. Here’s what we learned about Civil War, Deadpool, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and X-Men: Apocalypse!
Looking for 10 Cloverfield Lane and Independence Day: Resurgence? Our screencap breakdown of Cloverfield is here
Let’s start with Captain America: Civil War
This little moment of Tony putting on a portable gauntlet and using it to stop a bullet was undoubtedly the coolest bit of new footage in this trailer. But there’s also the mystery of why Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier is coming up to Tony in his regular day clothes and trying to kill him. Assassination attempt?
And actually, given that we see this in the commercial:
Either he’s still got some programming issues or he’s in a flashback.
We’ve seen the part after this before
This was the other important bit of footage: we finally see Ant-Man show up on Cap’s side. He’s got a sleek new helmet that also has a slightly Ultron-y look to it. Call back to that character’s comic book history with the Hank Pym Ant-Man?
Here they are, side by side. The new helmet is chromier, and has the sharp “wings” on the sides, and has a more geometric “nose.” If we find out Tony designed this, I will not be surprised.
Now, on to Deadpool:
Since it comes out this week, Deadpool is in that final, mad rush to promote itself to hell and back. This scene with a sword and a tire spoke is a good way to remind everyone how good the action in this looks.
Colossus looks to be saving the asses of both Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Deadpool here, after the confrontation at the docks that has been all over the trailers
And now the only parts of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows commercial
We’ve got Krang.
And Casey Jones skating away from Rocksteady. (In the full thing
And finally, X-Men: Apocalypse:
Sadneto is in a forest with someone I cannot make out. Although the plaid does indicate that this takes place right before this scene of him yelling in a ditch. Did Apocalypse destroy his lovely trees, right before enslaving his mind? And did that woman die?
This is our first real look at Psylocke in action, and she looks great. And that bodes poorly for the heroes, since she’s one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen.
Also new was this fight between Nightcrawler and Angel. If you watch closely at the end, you can see pink and blue smoke as Nightcrawler bamfs away from the fight.
Interesting is that he’s got white wings here and metallic ones in the trailer, which tells us that the comic arc
Lastly, we see Mystique getting strangled by Apocalypse. Kudos to her for getting close, but he seems not impressed. The lettering in the background is interesting, too. Did Apocalypse head back to the place where he came from? Or did the X-Men go there looking for information?
See the whole thing here.

Comic Books Have Made a Huge Comeback in the Past Five Years
We’re living in a golden age of superheroic media—Marvel dominates the Hollywood blockbuster scene, while The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl lead a ton of new comic book TV shows. And that leads to people writing off comics as just a source of raw material. But comics themselves are on a roll right now.
John Jackson Miller has been archiving comic sales statistics for years over at Comichron, and in his latest analysis for sales in January 2016 he paints a great picture of the current industry. Despite factors like big sales on graphic novels and a usual trend of smaller sales in January as fewer comics issues are released, the Top 300 comics of the month sold about 6.49 million copies in total.
That number might sound quite small next to the amount of people who’ll stand in line to see Captain America: Civil War in a few months. And in fact, it’s down a bit from last January—mainly thanks to the fact that last January saw the release of Star Wars #1, which was hugely boosted by being placed as a free item in the January 2015 LootCrate subscription bundle. But it’s actually amazing to see how far the comic book industry has come in just five years.
January 2011 was a very different time for comic books—sales were at an all-time low as DC prepared for its controversial New 52 reboot, and the comic book media was still on the cusp of exploding, with the release of The Avengers a year out and The Walking Dead only just shambling onto TV. Writes Miller:
On the other hand, some perspective: Five years ago, January 2011 was the pits. The Top 300 comics sold 4.4 million copies, likely the lowest sum since the 1930s. There were a couple of reasons: it was the bottom of the comics slump pre-DC reboot, but it was also a month where publishers shipped extremely few titles to market. The market ordered more than 2 million more comics this January, and publishers are releasing more, now, too: 719 new comics and graphic novels versus 555 five years ago. That shows a market with more breadth.
Not only have sales hugely improved in the past five years—a healthy and obvious sign of growth—but the industry itself is developing a wider range of comic books, to cater to a growing group of people enticed by these characters thanks to their presence in games, movies, and TV shows.
Sure, the reach of a comic book, even the most successful comic books, will never be able to dwarf the reach of a blockbuster like Batman v Superman or even a TV show like Agents of SHIELD. But it’s amazing to see the impact the rise of comic book media in pop culture has had over the last few years—it’s bolstered the comics industry, and ultimately rescued it from a pretty dire place.

Star Wars Will Rock Your Next Dance Party, Thanks to Rick Rubin
History has shown that Star Wars fans will buy anything. Food, sheets, underwear—anything with Star Wars on it sells. Well, maybe not “anything.” They seem to be pushing the boundaries with their latest creation, an electronic dance album.
It’s called Star Wars Headspace and will be released digitally on February 18, and to retail stores on March 18. The album has a crazy pedigree: It’s produced by music legend Rick Rubin, and features the work of several well-known electronic artists (or so they say, I must admit some ignorance with this subject matter). Overall, the idea is “original electronic dance music infused with Star Wars sound clips and effects.” No John Williams though.
Here are some examples, courtesy of the official site, which also has the full track list.
Oh, and if you aren’t sure who “Shag Kava” are, that’s reportedly the moniker adopted by J.J. Abrams and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who did the song for Maz Kanata’s place in The Force Awakens.
The idea of a Star Wars concept album isn’t something that’s new, but this official foray, especially under the Disney umbrella, is. There’s obviously an audience for this, it’s just not me. Is it you?
Netflix's Daredevil Costume Was Almost a lot More Faithful to the Comics
Daredevil has been a huge success in terms of bringing the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to life—but if there’s one sore point for a lot of fans, it’s the final costume, built up to over the course of the first season. But as Josh Nizzi’s fantastic concept art shows, the final suit could’ve been a lot closer to Daredevil’s classic red spandex.
Nizzi, who has done concept work for Age of Ultron, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and many more movies, recently shared two pieces of early concept art he did for Daredevil—his first version is definitely a lot closer to a “modernized” take on superhero spandex, keeping a lot of the comic book’s look but giving it some texture typical of Marvel’s other comic-to-screen translations:
The design was iterated on again and again, evolving further away from the comic book original—until there was something that only vaguely resembled Daredevil. Here’s Nizzi’s “version 8" take on the design:
This is a lot closer to what we ended up seeing on the show, but it’s also quite different from what you’d think of as Daredevil. You can also see where a lot of the elements from the comic design that were lost in the creation process were brought back to give us the look we saw in the series: The final suit has more more color, it ended up having horns as well as a larger faceguard.
Although some fans think the show didn’t go far enough in creating Daredevil’s comic book look, it’s interesting to see how far away the concepts strayed while in development.

Amazing News: Ava DuVernay Could Direct A Wrinkle in Time, from the Writer of Frozen
Please let this happen. Deadline reports that Selma director Ava DuVernay is being courted to direct the long-awaited movie of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. And the screenplay was written Jennifer Lee, writer and co-director of Frozen. That could be incredible.
http://www.amazon.com/A-Wrinkle-Time...
A Wrinkle in Time is one of the best books ever written, the story of a family whose father is kidnapped to another dimension. Meg Murry and her brother Charles Wallace have to rescue him, using the mysterious Tesseract. It’s the bomb, and it’s only ever had a shitty TV movie.
Of course, DuVernay is in high demand. Her name has been attached to tons of projects, and she’s already making a series for OWN. According to Deadline, she’s also being courted to direct a different science fiction project: Intelligent Life, a film written by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow and his writing partner Derek Connolly. Intelligent Life is about a guy who works at a UN project that prepares to greet alien life if we ever find any—and the guy falls in love with a woman who may be an alien. At one point, Trevorrow was planning to direct Intelligent Life next, after Jurassic World—until he was offered Star Wars Episode IX.
Either of these projects sounds pretty terrific, and I’d love to see DuVernay helm either of them. But come on—we NEED our Wrinkle in Time movie, and she could do a brilliant job with it. [via IndieWire]

The Archer Team Tackles That Private-Dick Life in New Season Trailer
After last week’s amazing shot-for-shot Magnum P.I. homage
Aside from the setting—and the fact that the gang is now working for a detective agency run by Cyril as you see logo above—it doesn’t look like too much has changed, to be honest. There are schemes involving night vision goggles and elaborate breaking-and-entering tactics; Archer taking a (probably well-deserved) hit from Lana’s fist in his eminently punchable face; a stripped-down Pam wearing explosives tool belts and (from the looks of it) working undercover with an overheated Cheryl; and Krieger being Krieger (except ... shirtless).
The new season of Archer premieres March 31.
Gotham Reveals the Terrifying Chinstrap of B.D. Wong's Hugo Strange
We’ve known for a while
The above image was revealed by TV Insider earlier today, but now Fox have released a trailer teasing both the arrival of Nathan Darrow’s Mr. Freeze and Wong’s debut as Doctor Strange (no, not that one
What the hell is going on with that multic0lor-haired test tube girl? What ever it is, Gotham will no doubt reveal it (and its connection to the Batman mythos) with the utmost sense of subtlety. That is the Gotham way, after all.
This Lego Paper Airplane Factory Is Wonderfully Over-Complicated
We’ve covered Arthur Sacek’s brilliant Lego creations before, but none have been as wonderfully complicated as this machine that turns a single piece of paper into a folded airplane. The contraption even launches the plane at the end of the assembly line, sending it off on its maiden test flight.
Sacek was hired by Elevation Digital Media in collaboration with Arrow Electronics to design and build this autonomous paper airplane factory, which is controlled by multiple Lego Mindstorms intelligent bricks, and quite a bit of custom code. It’s not the first Lego paper airplane machine
Arrow Electronics has also posted a behind-the-scenes video showing how parts of the paper airplane folding machine were designed and assembled. But it’s unfortunately not a thorough step-by-step guide, so you can forget about trying to follow along in order to build one for yourself.

You spend a good chunk of your computing time on phones and tablets these days, so why should your desktop be the only one that can use external storage? These flash drives include a microUSB connector to interface with your Android phones and tablets, and you can pick one up for just $12-$17.
These would be perfect if you were on vacation, and didn’t have enough free space on your phone to store all the photos you wanted to take. Or if you wanted to store some HD movies to watch on your tablet during a long plane ride. And of course, it never hurts to have an easy, offline way to move files back and forth between different devices. These prices are right in line with what you’d expect to see on normal flash drives, so if you own any microUSB devices, there’s really no downside to picking one up.

Like the idea of a Belkin WeMo Switch, but not willing to spend $40 to try one out. This TP-Link alternative has a nearly identical feature set for half the price.
Just like a WeMo switch, TP-Link’s Smart Plug will let you turn appliances on and off from your smartphone, and set schedules to toggle them automatically. The only major feature it’s lacking is IFTTT support, but it will integrate with an Amazon Echo for voice control. [TP-Link Smart Plug, $20]

I’m guessing that most of you already own an external battery pack or two, but if your new phone includes Quick Charge 2.0 support, you’ll want to upgrade your portable charger to take advantage.
$19 is a pretty solid price for any 15,000mAh battery pack; the Quick Charge port is just a cherry on top. [Aukey 15000mAh Portable External Battery Power Bank with Quick Charge 2.0, $19 with code JWRHH5I9]

Want Bluetooth audio and handsfree calling in your older car? This Wirecutter-recommended dongle takes the Bluetooth signal from your phone, and retransmits it to the FM radio station of your choice. The sound quality will take a hit, but if you don’t have an AUX jack, this is probably your best option short of buying an entirely new stereo.
We’ve seen deals on a few similar products before, but this one can actually pair with two separately phones simultaneously, if you want to trade off DJ duties with your travel companion. [GOgroove FlexSMART X2 Bluetooth In-Car FM Transmitter, $30 with code X2SAVE10]

Logitech’s new(ish) MX Anywhere 2 wireless mouse works on any surface, can run for two months on a charge, and will only set you back $63 (or less) on Amazon today. [Logitech MX Anywhere 2 Wireless Mouse, $63]
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Note: $63 is Amazon’s current price, which is the lowest they’ve ever offered. As of this writing though, there are a few third party sellers offering it for even less, though we aren’t sure how long those will stay in stock.
I was hoping Amazon would have a deal on the Echo today in light of its Super Bowl commercial appearances, but alas, we’ll have to settle for a $40 Fire tablet and $20 off Kindle e-readers.

If Kylo Ren Was an Inside Out Character, It Would Look a Little Something Like This
Torn between the dark side and the light, Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was surely one of the more emotionally conflicted movie characters in 2015. But how to visualize that? Enter the characters of Pixar’s Inside Out.
Artist Dan Hipp has taken the characters from the Pixar hit and created a beautiful, sad image of what Kylo Ren could be feeling either during this film, or going into the next. Check it out.
We’re not sure what’s sadder. The Joy in Kylo’s life being outside of his head, the fact Joy is his mom, or the core memory of his Dad.
This Week's Jughead Comic Will Reaffirm That Jughead Is Asexual
The Archie comics reboot has to be one of the biggest surprises in the comics industry of the last few years. Ever since the publisher dropped the comics code authority and began diversifying its approach to Archie and his friends, Archie has become one of the best comics around
http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-20-best-co...
The revelation won’t play a major part in this week’s Jughead #4, but just come up in a matter-of-fact conversation between Jughead and a fellow student, as revealed by Comic Book Resources:
Followers of Chip Zdarksy and Erica Henderson’s spectacular spinoff series Jughead—which similarly went under a big tonal shift and shakeup á la the main Archie series last year to modernize the denizens of Riverdale—shouldn’t really be surprised to see the comic openly acknowledge the diversity of Riverdale High.
Not only has Archie had characters on the LGBTQA spectrum before, most noticeably Kevin Keller, the first gay character introduced to the franchise, but Zdarksy has frequently described his approach to characterising Jughead’s romantic life as an asexual rather than as someone who was simply didn’t bother with, or even actively disliked women. Here he is at New York Comic-Con last year on the subject of romance in Jughead:
My view of Jughead is, over the 75 years [of his existence] there have been sporadic moments where he has dabbled in the ladies, but historically he has been portrayed as asexual. They just didn’t have a label for it, so they just called him a woman-hater.
But he’s not a misogynist — he just watches his cohorts lose their minds with hormones. People have asked me if there is going to be a romance if I’m writing Jughead, because I’m very romantic, and the answer is no, because there is enough of that in Archie. I think something like asexuality is underrepresented, and since we have a character who was asexual before people had the word for it, I’m continuing to write him that way.
Still, it’s honestly kind of amazing that one of the scant few asexual characters you see in big comics is making his debut in the pages of Archie books, of all places—even with the big push to see increased diversity in comics, sexual diversity has rarely yet to really expand much in the way beyond the Lesbian or Gay part of LGBTQA (that’s not to say there hasn’t been—Sera in Marvel’s Angela: Queen of Hel series, for example, is transgender). The creative talent behind the Archie comics continues to surprise and delight with its fresh take on a comics icon.

In This Short Film, Pamela Anderson Discovers Just How Creepy The Singularity Can Be
Fans of posthumanity and transhumanism make promises that sound scarily cheerful and unreal—eternal life, incredible mind powers—but you probably haven’t seen just how disturbing they can be. Until you watch this new short film, starring Pamela Anderson.
Connected is produced by Motherboard, and debuted in L.A. on Friday before going up online today. In Connected by Luke Gilford, Anderson plays Jackie, an “AuraCycle” instructor who’s in the middle of a midlife crisis—she gets a lot of inspiration from listening to some slightly skin-crawling tapes of Jane Fonda talking about how you can live forever and throw away the past. This all leads to Jackie making a defining decision, in the middle of what looks like a cult compound. You’ve probably never thought of brain implants and yoga together before, but after this, you’ll never be able to unsee it.
Watch the whole thing above!
Charlie Jane Anders is the author of All The Birds in the Sky, which is available now. Here’s what people have been saying about it. Follow her on Twitter, and email her.
This Absurd FBI Site Teaches Teens to Spot Violent Extremists
I’m not saying the FBI’s heart isn’t in the right place. Making sure children know the difference between healthy political discourse and attempts to sway them into extremism is a laudable goal. But the agency’s execution in a new website is just embarrassing.
The FBI just announced the launch of its “Don’t Be a Puppet” program. The too-interactive website is designed to create awareness of the problem of extremism among teens. “Don’t Be a Puppet” includes five stages where teens can get answers to questions like “What is violent extremism?” and “How do violent extremists make contact?”
It’s just all done in that “Yo kids, what’s up? I’m a cool adult” tone that government committee adopt too often. There’s a sense that the who.e thing was made in 1996:
You know how teens today love their first generation Game Boys in the year 2016? That’s actually a game called the “Slippery Slope to Extremism,” in which you guide a fast moving animal out of the way of obstacles that are—I think—meant to represent extremists. I tried to play and died a lot. And I think the animal is a sheep because, you know, sheeple.
Oh, and here’s a quiz about how violent extremists try to recruit you. It’s also a chance for the FBI to tell teens both that they know what they’re doing on the internet and that this great nation’s federal law enforcement agency doesn’t understand the internet one bit.
Or how about this game about the language violent extremists use? In this level, you’re supposed to match the statement to the rhetorical technique. I am still baffled, because some of them match more than one answer.
Because we live in America, there’s also a lot of time devoted to the First Amendment. Before you can enter the game, there’s a line of text that reminds you:
The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees free speech and religious liberty. People living in America are free to disagree with each other and with the government, but no one has the right to resort to violence as a means of expressing disagreement.
Inside the site, is this:
I guess I’m glad they’re not pretending free speech doesn’t exist? I just wish they weren’t so bad at making me take this thing seriously.
Everything about this site screams awful, out-of-touch 90s educational game—down to the hulkingly giant PCs, complete with blue screens of death. I think I played a bunch of point-and-click games just like this in elementary school, actually. Only they were trying to teach me math and not how to spot a terrorist.
Try again, FBI.
[6:24] I am now in a torture bunker with a projector and slides. What is this website?
[Thanks @pbump]
