If You Can Sit Through This Brothers Grimsby Trailer, Sacha Baron Cohen Will Owe You $100

Not saying that Sacha Baron Cohen will actually pay you $100 if you can watch this trailer for his new spy-fi comedy all the way through. Just that he will owe you $100. Be warned: The trailer really goes off the rails in the last 20 seconds or so.

Seriously, this could actually have been a super-funny movie. Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong are mega-talented blokes. This movie has an incredible cast overall. The writers include Phil Johnston (Wreck-It Ralph) and Peter Baynham (Alan Partridge). But if they put the best jokes in the trailer—as is usually the case—then I can’t even stand to think what the worst jokes in the movie are.

Avengers: Infinity War Directors Say People Should Prepare to be Shocked

Between now and when we finally see what happens in Avengers: Infinity War, we’re going to get six new Marvel movies. That sounds pretty great, but we are still curious about what this two-parter on the horizon holds, and its directors love to tease us.

In a new interview, The Russo Brothers—who are currently completing Captain America: Civil War before moving onto Infinity War Parts 1 and 2—dropped a very juicy quote about what may happen in those films, which begin on May 4, 2018.

The stakes of both Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War movies are gonna be very high, and there will be a price to pay for the characters. And that’s the whole point of cumulative storytelling. We’re going to go on emotional journeys with these characters. We’ve got a lot invested in the emotion. We have a responsibility to be mindful of how these people feel about the characters and, at the same time, we also have a responsibility to carry through on the storytelling. As filmmakers, we believe in stakes. You can’t have good storytelling without strong stakes. So, there will be a price to pay, there will be a price to pay in Civil War. There will be characters who suffer in that movie, and he will come out of that movie and never be the same. And in Infinity War the stakes will be raised to a whole new level. People should expect to be shocked when they see those movies.

That last bit, bolded by us for emphasis, is the really intriguing part. It’s impossible to predict what shocking events could take place in Infinity War, especially with Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther all happening in between. But you can bet it means death, it means destruction, it does not mean good things for our heroes.

If a little skirmish with Ultron can totally change the make up of The Avengers, who knows what Thanos could do.

A Gallery of Jaw-Dropping Concept Art From Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Now that The Force Awakens has hit theaters, Lucasfilm has started slowly revealing a treasure trove of concept art for the film, giving us a look at how The Force Awakens evolved visually over the course of its production. Most of the beautiful work has been collected in The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but here’s a ton of great pieces that have made their way to the internet.

And here’s your now mandatory warning when it comes to Star Wars talk: Some of the images below might be considered as mild spoilers, so while there’s nothing major, if you’re still waiting to see the movie, you might want to skip!

Buzzfeed kicked off the reveals with a huge gallery of images—head to the link to see plenty more, but here’s a handful of images, starting with initial designs for Han’s new jacket:

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Many movie novelizations are surprisingly different than the actual movies. The original Star Wars had a book version that was weirdly different and came out months earlier. So it’s probably not surprising that The Force Awakens’ own novel is contains some surprising moments that aren’t in the film.

Suffice to say, there will be major spoilers throughout this post for The Force Awakens. Not seen the movie yet? You’re going to want to get out of here pretty sharpish!

Alan Dean Foster—who wrote the very first Star Wars novelization (although he was credited as George Lucas in its first edition)—returned to write the Force Awakens novel. This book is already available as an e-book, with no physical release until January, for fear of spoilers.

We devoured the Force Awakens novel over the weekend, and noticed there were some pretty surprising differences. Here’s some of the biggest changes between the book (which was presumably written from a near-final draft of the script, as is the case with many movie novelizations) and the final movie.

http://www.amazon.com/Force-Awakens-...

Supreme Leader Snoke Has Been Around For Ages

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Supreme Leader Snoke is a whacking great mystery throughout The Force Awakens. Who is he? Where did he come from? Is he a Sith? Is he really that big, or is he holocommunicating with some major compensation issues?

The novelization doesn’t answer all of those questions, but it gives some insight into Snoke by revealing that he’s been working behind the scenes for quite some time, even during the Original Trilogy. In one of their several hologram chit chats, Snoke reveals to Kylo Ren that he actually had apprentices before the fallen Solo. But Ben shows the most promise, because he didn’t begin his training as an adept of the Dark Side, but was corrupted and fell from the light, something Snoke hadn’t experienced before:

It is far more than that. It is where you are from. What you are made of. The Dark Side—and the Light. The finest sculptor cannot fashion a masterpiece from poor materials. He must have something pure, something strong, something unbreakable, with which to work.

Snoke then recalls to Kylo that he saw the Empire “rise, and then fall”, and even that he knew that Darth Vader was Luke’s father (which is probably something Luke didn’t go touting publicly after Endor). This is something that he may have learned while seducing Ben to the dark side, admittedly, but in the book it’s implied that it was something he already knew at the time, anyway. The book really emphasizes that Snoke was a major presence throughout the events of the previous films, though, more than the film did—and that he has a vested interest in the Skywalker family lineage.

We Find Out How Poe Survived The Crash

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

After Finn and Poe liberate themselves from the Finalizer and crash land on Jakku, Poe essentially vanishes from the film until close to its climax—and there’s a reason for that, as he was originally meant to die early on, presumably in this crash.

The movie gives Poe a wishy-washy brief explanation for his survival (he ejected, and then went on his merry way) but doesn’t actually go into how Poe got off Jakku. This was one of our biggest questions, and at some point, it looks like the movie was going to answer it. In the novel, Poe doesn’t eject, but wakes up in the crashed TIE, and groggily wanders off pretty much just as Finn is running to it—he doesn’t hear his shouts because he’s concussed. Poe eventually meets up with a scavenger wandering the Jakku deserts, strikes up a connection with him the way he did with Finn, and then protects the scavenger from an attack by thugs with some slick speeder piloting. The scavenger takes Poe to an outpost where he can contact the Resistance for backup.

The “Cantina Scene” Was A Lot More Violent

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Remember how Han threatens C-3PO in A New Hope by saying that Wookiees have a habit of yanking people’s arms off when they lose at a game? Well, The Force Awakens nearly showed us that threat in action.

Unkar Plutt (the scrapyard owner that Rey trades with, played by Simon Pegg) tracks Rey and the gang to Takodana thanks to a locator he put on the Falcon, and confronts the young girl as she goes to see Maz. Rey tries to use her newly-acquired blaster on him, but forgets to take the safety off—and when Plutt gets hostile, Chewie steps in:

Grabbing the thrusting arm, a roaring Chewbacca twisted and ripped it off at the shoulder, throwing the dismembered limb clear across the room. Looking down at himself, Plutt let out a scream of agony...

Bloody hell. Understandably, you can see why that was cut from the film. But that moment would’ve been another link between The Force Awakens and A New Hope.

Starkiller Base Makes (Slightly) More Sense

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Okay, so Star Wars plays very loosely with the “science” part of its “science-fantasy” genre—parsecs, anyone?—but even by the franchises’ most egregious standards, the way Starkiller Base works in the film is quite frankly ridiculous.

It’s still ridiculous in the book, but it makes way more sense. Instead of slurping on stars like they’re hot, plasma-laden smoothies, Starkiller Base is powered by dark matter, which seems like a much more sustainable source of energy. In the film, when the base’s weapon fires, it shoots a single beam of energy across hundreds of thousands of miles... that then somehow inexplicably splits into 5 separate, pre-targeted beams to blow up the Republic Capital world Hosnian Prime, its four moons, and the New Republic’s fleet.

It’s really stupid.

In the book however, it plays out far differently. Starkiller Base doesn’t shoot a gigantic beam, but a ball of energy that is shot through sub-hyperspace, making it disappear just outside of the base, and then reappear just outside of its intended target. The ball of energy supercharges the target planet’s core, making it go supernova and burn up any nearby planets in the ensuing explosion. It’s still very silly Star Wars science, but way better than what we got.

Leia Has No Love For The New Republic

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

In the destruction of the Hosnian system, Leia loses someone close to her. Her Resistance-Senate envoy, Korr Sella (who was going to be played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers), is on Hosnian Prime on Leia’s behalf when Starkiller Base destroys it.

Why didn’t Leia go there herself? Turns out, she and the New Republic are not the biggest fans of each other. While the Republic secretly supports the Resistance, it publicly denounces the organization, and its relationship with General Organa has gone rather sour. When she dispatches Sella, Leia tells her that if she went instead of her agent, something sinister might happen to her:

I would have a terrible ‘accident,’ or become the victim of some ‘deranged’ radical. Or I would eat something that didn’t agree with me. Or encounter someone who didn’t agree with me.

Hey, Senators, show some respect to the lady who helped make your Senate in the first place! Wait, too late, you’re all dead now anyway.

Ben Solo Really Hated Han... But Still Felt Bad For Killing Him

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Kylo Ren—a.k.a. fallen Jedi Ben Solo—and his emotinal trauma are some of the most intriguing parts of The Force Awakens. He’s really the first villain in the Star Wars movies that we’ve met, who is consumed by turmoil and his own nebulous rage. In the book, that rage is considerably less nebulous: Ben despised his father, finding the smuggler he really was could never match up to the expectations he had from Han’s legendary role in the Rebellion, a disappointment Snoke capitalized on.

In the movie’s most poignant moment, Ben draws his father (who, in the book, is revealed never to have seen his son as an adult until Ben takes his mask off in front of him) close with a touching declaration of his personal conflict, only to reveal he was drawing Han in to stab him through the heart with his lightsaber. In the film, it’s very clear that Ben is doing this to set himself firmly on the path to the Dark side, not on a redemptive arc towards the light—and even JJ Abrams has since said that it was meant to show there is no longer good in him.

The novel leaves Ben in a much greyer area after he kills his father though:

Following through on the act ought to have made him stronger, a part of him believed. Instead, he found himself weakened.

It’s an interesting distinction that leaves interpretations of the movie scene up for debate.

Han and Leia’s Relationship Was Clearer—And Sadder

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

I’ll just come out and say it: The book confirms that Han and Leia got married after the events of Return of the Jedi. Sorry Rob, your unhappy ending just got a little unhappier.

But on top of that, the book also reveals that Leia knew Snoke would try to turn Ben to the Dark Side—and kept this information from Han, thinking that as a non-Force user, he wouldn’t be able to help, or understand. Leia thought as the Force sensitive parent, it was her duty alone to protect Ben, but she ultimately failed him:

I was hoping that I was wrong, that it wasn’t true. I hoped I could sway him, turn him away from the dark side, without having to involve you.

I was afraid that your reactions would only drive him farther to the dark side. I thought I could shield him from Snoke’s influence and you from what was happening.

Her keeping the secret was part of why Han left her following Ben’s ascension to the Knights of Ren and the massacre of the new Jedi Order—because as in the movie, Han believed that it was his fault Ben turned.

Who started chopping onions in here?

The Battle For Starkiller Base Had A Lot More Ground Action

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Although they were plastered all over the toys and merchandise for the film, the First Order’s snowtroopers barely appeared—some were at the First Order rally, and that’s it. But now we know why they and their speeders ended up being such a big part of the toy push: a whole action sequence from the climax was cut from the final movie.

In the novel, when Rey and Finn make their way to the oscillator to plant their last set of bombs, they do so by hijacking a First Order snowspeeder—which leads to a big chase as Snowtroopers took pursuit of the heroes.

Poe Didn’t Get His Trench Run Moment

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Some of this may have come down to the fact that in earlier drafts, Poe was meant to die earlier on in the film, but one of The Force Awakens’ most oblique homages to A New Hope almost didn’t happen. In the book, the Resistance’s X-Wing squadrons simply bomb the oscillator with everything they have after Han’s ground team blow it wide open—no trench, no fancy flying, just a simple run. Completely different to Poe’s crowning moment as he goes solo and flies into the oscillator, torpedoing it from the inside.

Maybe if we didn’t have that trench run bit, Ello Asty wouldn’t have had to die (he’s the only casualty in the trench run, in the movie). Don’t worry Ello, you’ll live on as an action figure. *sniffles*

An Alternative Answer To R2-D2’s Awakening

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

Although JJ Abrams has already clarified how R2-D2 managed to miraculously restart himself after his self-induced droid coma in the movie, the book actually offers an alternate, simple reason.

According to Abrams, it’s the mention of the Imperial Archive that kickstarts R2’s awakening, a process that takes place over a good chunk of the film—but in the book, the astromech simply hears the mention of the Imperial records as where the files stored on BB-8 are from, and wakes up almost instantaneously, sensing the presence of the remaining part of the map nearby within BB-8.

The Film Could Have Ended With A Major Callback To A New Hope

The 11 Biggest Differences Between the Book and Movie Versions of The Force Awakens

The final moments of The Force Awakens are silent—Rey, having found Luke Skywalker, holds out his old lightsaber to the venerable Jedi Master, silently imploring him to recognize the weapon.

In the book, the moment is still silent, but it’s a fun little callback to Leia’s hologram from the very first film:

His hair and beard were white, and his countenance was haunted. He did not speak, nor did she.

Remembering, Rey reached into her pack and removed his Lightsaber. Taking several steps forwad, she held it out to him. An offer. A plea. The galaxy’s only hope.

It’s probably for the best she didn’t quote his own sister at him. I’m not sure Luke would’ve appreciated it.

NASA Just Called Off the Launch for Its Brand New Mars Lander

Mars InSight lander was set to blast its way towards the red planet just three short months from now. Today, NASA announced that leaks that had sprung up in the lander wouldn’t be fixed in time. The next window to send it back won’t be for two years—and whether it will make it even then isn’t certain.

A Leak in the Lander

The problem started with one of the most intriguing new instruments on InSight, the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, and the difficulty of keeping it airtight. When it first sprung a leak this summer, researchers thought they’d initially landed on a fix. Then they found another leak, and another, and another.

They kept patching the leaks, but a few days ago when they tested their fix in the ultracold conditions it would face on Mars (less than -45 degrees Celsius), it became clear that the leaks hadn’t been fixed—and that they simply wouldn’t be able to be fixed in time to meet the scheduled launch.

This afternoon they made the decision to cancel. It was a fairly easy decision to make, said NASA Associate Administrator John Grunsfeld. “The leak made the decision for us,” he said.

NASA Just Called Off the Launch for Its Brand New Mars Lander

What happens to InSight?

This is a significant setback to the mission. The InSight launch was particularly exciting because of the kinds of information the lander was designed to gather—on just how the planet formed itself in the first place. Curiosity and the other rovers we have in place now are invaluable, but they don’t have the tools InSight would have.

“This was going to be our first mission to explore the interior of Mars using the same techniques we used to explore the interior of Earth,” said Grunsfeld. The mission would have landed both an incredibly advanced seismometer on the planet (to measure marsquakes) and a heat-flow probe, which would have told us more about the planet’s core. The plan is still, hopefully, to send InSight (and its instruments) to the planet—but now the timeframe is much murkier.

Finding a launch window to Mars is notoriously difficult. The next one won’t arrive for another twenty-six months. But, in response to questions about whether InSight was set to go up in the next one, which arrives in May of 2018, NASA wasn’t ready to confirm.

Part of the issue is fixing the lander’s leaks, but a perhaps bigger problem is money. Director of planetary science Jim Green put the total cost of the mission at $675 million, but so far budgeting has only been for $525 million. First, they’d need to get a better idea of the new costs and then come up with a plan to pay for them. Decisions about next steps are what they’re going to be talking about now, he said.

NASA Just Called Off the Launch for Its Brand New Mars Lander

Will it be launched at all?

With the cost issues and the difficulty of getting a launch window—and with no certain launch date planned for the next window in 2018—certainly the question of whether InSight will make it to Mars at all must be asked.

Despite the problems, NASA officials told Gizmodo that they’re not concerned about the possibility of InSight not being able to launch at all. “There’s not really a question,” the launch team told Gizmodo that they wouldn’t be ready by twenty-six months to have the leaks fixed. “I’ve been working on getting these measurements for the last 25 years of my career,” noted principle investigator Bruce Banerdt. “I see this as a minor setback. It’s not a disaster, it’s a minor hiccup on our path to getting this information on Mars and our place in the universe.”

Certainly, things look optimistic for the technological side of InSight’s trip to Mars in 2018. But there’s also that lingering budget issue to keep in mind, and there things are much less clear. “We either decide to go forward or we don’t, said a NASA spokesperson during the conference, “and a lot of that that depends on cost data.”

You Can Now Watch 360-Degree Video on Your TV

Earlier this year, YouTube rolled out 360-degree videos. Like magic, they let you peer around in any direction from within the video. Now, one company is taking that futuristic video-viewing from your computer—and bringing it to your much bigger TV screen.

Today, Littlstar, a Disney-funded VR service, announced it’s bringing 360-degree videos to televisions using Apple TV. It has brought VR and 360-degree videos on a bunch of platforms—including mobile apps, Samsung Gear VR, and now, Apple TV—so there are thousands of already existing videos in the library that you can watch on your TV.

Littlstar’s partnered with big names like National Geographic, the Wall Street Journal, Mountain Dew, and Showtime. Huge brands contribute content, but Littlstar also curates good stuff from individual users or smaller outfits, too.

Using your Siri Remote’s track pad, you can gawk around the world within the video, picking up on something new each time. 360-degrees are wild and a game changer because they make you feel like you’re really there, and like VR, they shift the power from the camera and the director to you, the viewer. You decide what to look at, where to look, and for how long.

Littlstar launched in 2014 and billed itself as the world’s first online community for 360-degree, panoramic and VR video. It’s gone through Disney Accelerator, an incubator that helps tech startups succeed in the entertainment space.

In this five-minute mini documentary from the Wall Street Journal, you follow a professional ballerina rehearsing in the studio. (Being able to smoothly track the fast-moving dancer with minimal frame rate glitches is pretty impressive, by the way!) And then you watch her from your balcony seat at New York’s Lincoln Center theater. National Geographic, meanwhile, sticks you in the middle of the majestic Yellowstone State Park. In another popular video, Wargames, publisher of the massively multiplayer online title World of Tanks, places you in a reenactment of a 1941 WWII tank battle.

It makes sense that Littlstar, or companies like it, want to bring 360-degree videos—2D VR, essentially—to TVs. As entertainment media has splintered and fragmented into a trillion different services the last few years, tech companies and content creators have been trying to figure out how to bring internet-centric services like Netflix to the comforts of a big TV set that you can watch from your couch. Products like Apple TV, Roku and Sling bring streaming video from your internet browser to your television, and online gaming platform Steam recently ventured into the living room with its brand new physical console.

Entertainment and journalism are two of the most exciting spaces for VR and 360-degree technology to go crazy in. Today, your TV set—tomorrow, a movie theater? We’re hoping, and waiting.

J.J. Abrams Explains Why That Lightsaber Shot From the Trailer Isn't in The Force Awakens

J.J. Abrams Explains Why That Lightsaber Shot From the Trailer Isn't in The Force Awakens

Years of anticipation leading up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens made several things obvious once the film came out. Chief among them is that several shots in the highly scrutinized trailers were not in the movie. Now, the film’s director has explained the biggest one.

Minor spoilers follow.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, J.J. Abrams explained that the shot glimpsed above, of Maz Kanata handing the Skywalker lightsaber to General Leia, was not in the movie.

That was a scene actually filmed, but we took out. At one point, Maz used to continue along with the characters back to the Resistance base, but we realized that she really had nothing to do there of value, except to have her sitting around.

Lupita [Nyong’o] did film scenes on set for that sequence, but it felt like going right just to go left, and it was unnecessary. So we ended up leaving those things out.

It ended up in the trailer because when that trailer came out back in April, that scene was still in the current edit of the movie. But, it eventually hit the cutting room floor.

This, of course, makes perfect sense. But what’s less clear is how Maz handing the lightsaber to Leia fits into the narrative of the saber. In the film, we see her hand it to Finn so he can fight on Takodana. Finn then leaves the planet with the saber. So it seems she may have come back with Finn, Han and Chewie, asked Finn for the saber back and then told Leia the story.

What did Maz say in this moment though? Leia was being handed the saber of her father and missing brother? Did she find out how it got off Bespin? Maybe we’ll find out one day.

The Year In Video Game Sex, 2015

It feels like video games got raunchier in 2015. More games tackled sex in novel ways this year, and many of the biggest controversies of 2015 revolved around nudity.

Oh, and lots of people continued to draw video game dicks in 2015, too. Some things never change.

Here’s a look back at the biggest sex stories of the year.

More than ever before, 2015 surprised me in the ways games handled sex. There was unicorn sex, virtual reality sex, and even shockingly honest depictions of romance in video games. It wasn’t all good, though. The fringes of video game sex were also startling and dark, in their own ways.

One of the biggest controversies of 2015 had to be censorship. I’m not certain that this was a particularly bad year for game alterations, but I do think the internet makes it easy to spot and talk about any changes made within a game. 2015 was just the year we started paying more attention to this stuff.

Two of Neil Gaiman's Short Stories Will Become Gorgeously-Drawn Graphic Novels

Dark Horse Books is planning a pair of graphic novels adapted from short stories by Neil Gaiman: How to Talk to Girls at Parties, with art by Brazilian artists (and twin brothers) Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon, and Troll Bridge, with art by frequent Gaiman collaborator Colleen Doran.

Two of Neil Gaiman's Short Stories Will Become Gorgeously-Drawn Graphic Novels

Dark Horse will also publish hardcover reprints of Creatures of the Night and The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch, also adapted from Gaiman stories, both with art by Michael Zulli.

Of the new titles, Gaiman told Publisher’s Weekly:

He chose Bá and Moon to adapt How to Talk to Girls at Parties because he’s a “huge admirer” of the two artists. He went on: “They have a storytelling aesthetic where [depicting] body language is everything. The story is all about what’s in the narrators’ heads, so it can be very hard to do that in comics. It’s incredibly enjoyable to write a story and see them make it real.”

Gaiman said he has worked with Doran many times, beginning with Sandman, his acclaimed fantasy comics series. He chose her to adapt “Troll Bridge” because he knows “how good she is.” Gaiman added that Doran’s art choices for the story have been an “absolute delight.” He explained: “She showed me an unusual style [done with color pencils] that isn’t like classic comics. Her pencils are wonderful, layered full-color drawings. They’re subversive, more like children’s book illustrations from 50 years ago.”

How to Talk to Girls at Parties will be out in June 2016; look for Troll Bridge in September 2016.

Ralph McQuarrie's Ultra-Rare Cover For The Empire Strikes Back Novelization Is Gorgeous

Starwars.com has been running an ongoing feature series about the art of the beloved concept artist Ralph McQuarrie, recounting the history behind some of the artist’s lesser known or exceedingly rare pieces of art—including a spectacular look at one of McQuarrie’s rarest-ever paintings.

The latest entry in the series predominantly focuses on McQuarrie’s work for the cover of the Empire Strikes Back novelization from Del Rey. Many of McQuarrie’s planned ideas for the cover were in fact adaptations of his production artwork from the film, trimmed down from their widescreen originals into a format more suitable for the cover. McQuarrie pondered between vistas of Cloud City and Hoth, to scenes from Luke and Vader’s duel, but ultimately settled on something inspired by artwork he’d done of Luke Skywalker escaping his downed Snowspeeder in front of an Imperial Walker.

Ralph McQuarrie's Ultra-Rare Cover For The Empire Strikes Back Novelization Is Gorgeous

Ultimately however, the novelization was released without McQuarrie’s cover—the first run simply included the poster artwork from Roger Kastel, and it was believed that McQuarrie had simply stopped working on the cover art when it was no longer needed... but that wasn’t the case.

It turns out that the book was briefly solicited with a cover featuring McQuarrie’s art—as the poster art was unavailable during solicitation—a fact that only came to light when an extremely rare printing of the solicit found its way to eBay recently.

Following the eBay auction, the Lucasfilm archives were scoured, and the original McQuarrie piece, thought lost and unfinished, was found:

We’ve seen so much of McQuarrie’s iconic art over the years, it’s almost amazing that we can still uncover even more of it all these years later. Head on over to the link below to see more of McQuarrie’s work for the book, including rough sketches of initial ideas for his cover.

Which of These Albums Reimagined with Star Wars Characters Is Your Favorite?

The return of Star Wars has brought us many good things (a chance to revisit our Han Solo crushes from 4th grade) and many bad things (ketchup-infused VaderDogs). But nothing out there is as truly awesome as these album covers inspired by the Star Wars universe.

Steven Lear masters Photoshop with a Jedi-like acumen in his Instagram project @WhyTheLongPlayface, which features dozens and dozens of vinyl/Star Wars mashups.

I don’t know if it’s a case of concurrent nostalgia because some of these albums were on heavy rotation in my house during same time that the movies became a childhood obsession, or the fact that Lear completely nails it when it comes to melding certain characters with the appropriate musical reference.

One thing I do know: The “Solo” joke never, ever gets old.

Scroll through the feed strewn with Lear’s brilliance and let me know which ones are your favorites.

Boston Dynamics' Robo-Dogs Pulling a Sleigh Is a Terrifying Glimpse of Christmas Future

If you thought waking up on Christmas morning to above-average temperatures and no snow on the ground was scary, Boston Dynamics gives us a far more terrifying glimpse into a dystopian future where Santa’s reindeer have been replaced with (highly kickable) trotting robotic dogs.

In this (what’s the opposite of heartwarming?) holiday video we see three of Boston Dynamic’s Spot bots, the younger sibling to the company’s BigDog, pulling a sleigh. If there’s one silver lining, it’s that Santa hasn’t been replaced by ATLAS—yet! Did Futurama teach us nothing?

Sick of Unwanted Spoilers? Erase Them From Your Mind with Spoiler-Free™

Some of us love spoilers—but some of us really, really hate them. Spoilers have become an especially charged topic of late, with the new Star Wars movie among other things. So it’s a good thing you can sign on to a new Kickstarter for SpoilerFree and erase those spoilers from your brain!

Okay, not really. SpoilerFree is a fictional device that is one of the weird inventions featured in Help Fund My Robot Army, an anthology of made-up Kickstarters. Still, it’s a pretty compelling pitch:

How The SpoilerFree Device Works

Simply place the neural harness on your head and adjust the straps until it is comfortably snug and the electrode pads are as close as possible to your scalp; for maximum effectiveness, please shave your head. If we meet our first stretch goal, you will also have the option of applying our special conductive gel to the electrode pads.

Next, press the green button on the control pad or your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device running our SpoilerFree app. Now, think of the thing that you want to forget—really picture it, the outrage and indignation, and the smug arrogance of the person who ruined everything. Now press the red button and keep trying to remember the spoiler. When the device has scrubbed all traces of that enjoyment-sapping experience from your head, it will play a pleasant chime.

And that’s it. It’s really that simple. Our prototype has been thoroughly tested and safeguards in our application’s software will ensure that you don’t forget anything important like your spouse’s name or the smell of lavender.

The story “For Entertainment Purposes” by Jeremiah Tolbert is pretty hilarious and thought-provoking in general. Read the whole thing here.

Here's How We'll Meet the Justice League In Batman v Superman

Kurt Russell confirms he’s in talks for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Mark Ruffalo once again kills our hopes for a standalone Hulk movie. James Cameron talks Avatar 2. Plus, a crazy new poster for Deadpool, what to expect in Doctor Who’s Christmas Special, and Bradley Cooper returns to Limitless. Spoilers!

Batman v Superman

Latino Review claims to have uncovered just how the cameo appearances of the future members of the Justice League in the film. Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg will all allegedly appear in the film (no Green Lanterns, either Hal Jordon or one of the other characters from Green Lantern Corps).

Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor purportedly plays a role in bringing Aquaman into the story, Cyborg’s pre-Cyborg persona Victor Stone will be introduced in a minor role, and the Flash actually has two appearances: one in costume in a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moment, and one as simply Barry Allen. But also, the site believes Barry’s non-costumed appearance could be cut. As ever with unsourced rumors like this, it’s best to take it with a pinch of salt.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2

Following the recent rumors that he was being approached to play Star-Lord’s father, Kurt Russell has actually confirmed he has been approached by Marvel. Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russell confirmed the talk, but not the role—and hedged his bets as to whether he’d join the film:

I literally got a phone call two days ago about this, I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots that’s never seen it. Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it. So, I didn’t realize that the man [James Gunn] had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it, and I have to watch the movie because I can’t bring anything for you. I’ve got nothing to offer here.’ So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do.

Hulk

Mark Ruffalo once again explains the obstacles to a standalone Hulk film, this time less optimistically than he has been in the past:

I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now, it doesn’t look particularly promising.

Animated Spider-Man

The animated Spider-Man movie has been pushed back to December 21st, 2018, from its previous summer 2018 slot. [CBR]

The Emoji Movie

But excellent news! God is dead, and Sony has dated its Emoji-based animated film for August 11, 2017. [Coming Soon]

Avatar 2

James Cameron is hopeful the movie will be out in two years time:

Christmas of ‘17 is the target. At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story. We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. (We’ve finished) all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.

Doctor Who

Here’s a few dialogue teasers for this Friday’s Christmas Special, “The Husbands of River Song”:

“It’s not my head. Well, it is my head, but it’s not my gun.”

“I have an augmented lifespan, long story.”

“See you in four hundred years.”

“He’ll be around here somewhere. This is the closest intersection with the Doctor’s timeline, that’s why I crashed Hydroflax’s ship here.”

“The crash of the Byzantium. Didn’t they make a movie of that?”

“If either of you use my name again, I will remove your organs in alphabetical order. Any questions?”

Galavant

Here’s a press release for episodes 3 and 4 of season 2, “Aw, Hell, the King” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Belittled”. [Spoiler TV]

“Aw, Hell, the King” – Desperate to raise an army and storm Hortensia, Galavant and King Richard return to his former castle to find the village thriving, now that they’ve found democracy. The discovery leads Richard to have an identity crisis now that his people don’t need him. Galavant uses a town hall meeting to recruit fighters from the village, but the volunteers are in short supply. In Hortensia, an evil wedding planner named Wormwood poisons Isabella’s mind with an enchanted tiara, intent on making her help him take over the kingdom. Meanwhile, Madalena threatens Sid with death unless he helps Gareth overcome his guilt-ridden nightmares about betraying Richard on “Galavant,” airing SUNDAY, JANUARY 10 (8:00–8:30 p.m. EST) on the ABC Television Network.

“Bewitched, Bothered and Belittled” — While continuing their quest to gather an army, King Richard discovers that he has a connection to Roberta, the beautiful warrior who volunteered to help. Galavant plays matchmaker. Madalena is invited to the Basikobitcz party – the “it” girls of the kingdom – and can’t wait to be accepted into their group. The party is not what she expected, and, when she returns home, she discovers that she has feelings and does not like her new emotion. Gareth cheers her up with a present while Chef tries to convince Gwen that their lives are better in Hortencia. Under Wormwood’s spell, Isabella is in full wedding-planning mode, on “Galavant,” airing SUNDAY, JANUARY 10 (8:30–9:00 p.m. EST) on the ABC Television Network.

We're Getting a Whole Year of Never-Before-Seen Star Trek History in 2016

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and fans are getting a lot to celebrate with—a new movie in Star Trek Beyond, and the promise of a brand new Star Trek show in early 2017. But every day of 2016, they’re going to get an extra treat: rare pieces of Star Trek history, unearthed from Gene Roddenberry’s collection.

The 366 project, revealed by Entertainment Weekly, will see one picture of a rare or never-before-seen item from original Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s vault, maintained by Roddenberry Entertainment, released on the company’s Facebook page every day in 2016. 366 items, 366 days. Thanks, leap year!

On top of the 366 items waiting to be revealed, Entertainment Weekly got a look at an extra three pieces from Roddenberry’s vault, including the above storyboard art of the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, a behind-the-scenes image of Leonard Nimoy from the movie (the actor had, at first, flatly refused to return as Mr. Spock), and, perhaps most interestingly of all, an early draft of the original series’ iconic opening narration from Captain Kirk:

This is the story of the United Space Ship Enterprise. Assigned a five year patrol of our galaxy, the giant starship visits Earth colonies, regulates commerce, and explores strange new worlds and civilizations. These are its voyages… and its adventures.

Slightly less poetic than “Where no man has gone before.” What might have been, eh? Head on over to the links below to see the rest of the images.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Last week, we tasked you with celebrating the release of The Force Awakens by trying to match the movie’s completely bizarre and overwhelming array of tie-in products. The results are in, and from what I can tell, io9 readers love bad puns and going a little lewd (which is why we love you). Check ‘em out!

http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-io9-photos...

And yes, some of these nearer the end might be a bit NSFW for your morning browsing. You’ve been warned!

First off, you can see Pessimippopotamus’ fantastic Vader grill (complete with toasted Hayden Christensen!) above, leading the charge in what was some very silly punnage. Like this The Force A’Bacons pack from DrewPew, proving that bad puns are usually the best ones:

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Food was a popular choice, as C.T. Rex Pope treated us to a little Yub Nub grub... would you try it?

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Not gonna lie. I’d probably eat several of Drewpy’s Crossguard Hotdogs, because I apparently I hate myself and my insides.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Kevindougl also went down the flame-grilled Anakin Skywalker route, opting for an homage to those black-bunned burgers from The Phantom Menace’s 3D re-release:

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

While Citizen-Dick imagined some product placement within the movie itself. Too bad the scene got cut!

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Beyond the world of Star Wars eating, Lorin imagined the greatest horror the galaxy far, far away has ever seen: Space Donald Trump.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

“They’re okie day!” will make me laugh every time, ComedyofErrs. Every time.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Moldywarp69 took the Spaceballs flamethrower to the next level—sorry, Knights of the Old Republic, this is the best Star Wars RPG now.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Yourspacelawyer imagined an unfortunate alternative for that look on Finn’s face in all the trailers.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Then you guys got weird, which is always fun! Dystopika imagined the world of fully armed and operational women’s medicine.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Quirked combined puns with lewdness, creating the ultimate io9 ‘shop:

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Punny Name gave Darth Vader exactly what he needed:

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

But it was Pessimippopotamus who went the most full on, with that mentally-scarring Jar Jar Binks lollipop from The Phantom Menace.

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

Oh my.

Good job, everyone! But maybe commenter Stormcastle was right—and no matter how silly you try to think, sometimes you can’t beat honest-to-god real Star Wars products:

The Silliest Star Wars Tie-Ins From Our Force Awakens Photoshop Contest

I hope I spend the rest of my days blissfully ignorant of whatever “Jedi Jelly” looked like. Ew.

Paper Puppets Animate the Discovery of the Coelacanth, a Living Fossil

We’re always happy when there’s a new Animated Life to watch, and the last one for the year is no exception. This time out, we’ve got the coelacanth and the discovery that the fish with the 400 million-year-old lineage is still alive.

Flora Lichtman and Sharon Shattuck’s series is always fueled by their own geeky discovery. As they put in The New York Times article accompanying the video:

In the course of researching this film, we learned all kinds of amazing facts about the coelacanth. For instance, unlike most fish, they give birth to live young. They produce eggs the size of grapefruits, which then hatch internally. From video footage taken by the explorer Hans Fricke — which we used as inspiration for our sets and puppets — we know coelacanths are prone to some odd behavior. They’ve been spotted doing headstands underwater.
