Elizabeth Bonesteel On Building New Worlds And Blending Genres

One of the books that we’ve been most excited about this spring is Elizabeth Bonesteel’s debut, The Cold Between, the first novel in her Central Corps series. The book comes out this week, and we had a chat with Bonesteel about her inspirations for her writing and this book.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Cold-Betwe...

Bonesteel’s maternal grandfather was one of the chief builders for the Saturn V rocket, something that stuck with her as a child and pushed her towards her interests in programming and software development. It’s only recently that she’s become a full-time writer.

The Cold Between is your first novel, and it takes place in a really well-detailed universe. Can you tell us a little about how you developed your world, and what influenced you along the way?

I began by thinking about what sorts of challenges humanity will be facing over the next several centuries, and the sorts of social and technological developments that would have to happen to allow us to survive as a species. From there, I posited an Earth where there has been a large loss of population — due to climate disaster, war, or both — but where information has managed to largely survive. At some point, I figured enough people would look at the devastated Earth, look up at the stars, and think “How much worse could it really be?” Add evolving technology and many centuries, and you’ve got a scattered system of colonized planets.

What I’ve realized is that from a political and economic standpoint, I’ve built something that’s quite old-fashioned. Colonies have local economies that operate at various levels of sophistication, but most of them rely on materials brought from elsewhere, and are often at the mercy of other governments in ways they can’t control. Supply chain disruption can be life or death. There’s a lot of luck in who thrives and who doesn’t.

There’s definitely political commentary there, although I didn’t think about that as I was writing it!

Who are some of the authors who are important to you as a writer?

Agatha Christie is a big one. She started writing one day, and just didn’t stop. I like some of her books better than others, but overall her output is incredibly consistent. P.D. James is another. Her characters are always so vivid, and never pure, not even the good guys. And in every book she manages to break my heart.

In-genre is harder, because I tend to remember individual books rather than an entire body of work. But Tanith Lee was huge for me growing up. I remember sitting down with one of her books — Lycanthia, I think it was — and pulling apart her sentences, trying to figure out how she wrote such beautiful prose. And of course prose falls apart if you take individual words out of context, so I never did get a good answer.

Elizabeth Bonesteel On Building New Worlds And Blending Genres

There’s a blend of genres on display here: mystery, space opera and romance. How did you find the right balance between each of these?

I really do think most stories are mysteries, one way or another. Murder is a good driver of plot, because in order to solve the mystery, you have to piece together the past without the input of the person most relevant to it. So I didn’t think specifically “I will write a Space Mystery!” It was more that the story began with a mystery, and it happened on a distant world.

As far as romance goes — romantic entanglements are a fairly common occurrence in many lives. Crisis can create strong bonds even between relative strangers, so it made sense to use romance, among other things, to motivate my characters. But past Elena and Trey’s first encounter, the relationship builds from the action rather than the other way around. At the start, despite their lovely night together, it’s far more important to Elena that Trey is unjustly accused of a crime. Her feelings develop as she gets to know him, and sees how he responds to what is happening.

Space opera flows naturally, I think, from both mystery and romance. Maybe it’s the only thing big enough to hold both at once! But really, once I decided what was behind the killing, there was no other way to tell the story.

Commander Elena Shaw and Treiko Zajec are central to this book, thrown together after a one night stand. Why is it that Shaw is so adamant on sticking with Trey, when she can just as easily cut her ties and leave everything behind her? What is it that drives her?

Elena is a black-and-white thinker, probably to an extreme degree. But when she first comes to Trey’s defense, she doesn’t expect to get so involved. She figures she’ll tell the cops they goofed, and they’ll say “Oops! Sorry!” and take it from there. When that doesn’t happen, she gets angry, and her focus becomes justice for the dead man, which she feels is her obligation, both professionally and personally. So at the start, at least, she’s not so much sticking with Trey as sticking with her investigation. That he is willing to help her, and risk himself to do so, is what strengthens that relationship.

The subtitle here is A Central Corps novel: and another installment, Remnants of Trust is due out this fall. What do you have planned out for future installments?

There are some natural consequences that flow from the events of The Cold Between, and the plot of Remnants of Trust deals with some of that. But we also see more of the Corps’ role in helping colonies survive, and what happens when things don’t go as planned. Stories begin when things fall apart. That’s true for Remnants of Trust, as well as the installments afterward.

The Cold Between will be released on March 8th as a trade paperback and as an audiobook from Audible.com.

Top Gun Is King, But Other Movies Featured Amazing F-14 Tomcat Footage As Well

Top Gun made the F-14 Tomcat a true household name and a movie star. But a decade later, the movie Executive Decision also featured some glorious Tomcat scenes, and of VF-84—the “Jolly Rogers”—no less. Not only that, but we also all got see Steven Seagal die early on in the film.

http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/kick-the-tires...

Check out this HD footage from the movie:

Six years before Top Gun, The Final Countdown hit theaters and featured the Navy’s still very new F-14A Tomcats, also in Jolly Rogers colors. There are some gorgeous scenes featuring Tomcats in this sci-fi time-travel flick as well, many of which are more practical than those staged for other films.

http://www.amazon.com/Final-Countdow...

Another great Tomcat homage was the documentary Speed and Angels, but sadly, the producers decided to use sepia and high-contrast processing filters over many of the scenes, giving them a dramatic but unrealistic look. Still, it is a fantastic documentary and captures the end of the Tomcat era.

Heath Ledger 'Completely Ruined' Christian Bale's Plans For Batman

While out on publicity for his latest movie, The Knight of Cups, Christian Bale has expressed some second thoughts about his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

When interviewed for Yahoo Movies, Bale noted that he didn’t quite capture the extent to which Bruce Wayne was messed up. This isn’t the first time that Bale has said that he’s slightly jealous of Ben Affleck’s opportunity to play the character in this month’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

“Batman, he’s this very very dark, messed up character. I found when I put on the suit, I feel like a bloody idiot if I don’t use this as a means of his true, monstrous self that he allows to come out in that moment.”

He went on to note that Heath Ledger completely upended all of his plans when it came to portraying the character. That’s not really all that much of a surprise, given how much of a messed up character The Joker is.

Looking back, Bale noted that he didn’t quite accomplish what he wanted to do with the character, but ruled out ever reprising the character again “Enough’s enough - we did our thing”.

It would be interesting to see just what Bale had in mind for a more screwed up Bruce Wayne, and how that might have looked.

Once we get a look at Affleck’s Batman, it’ll be interesting to see just how the two compare, and who comes out on top.

Successful $100,000 Kickstarter Dev Calls It Quits Due To Drama

In 2014 nearly 4,000 backers pledged $100,000 for a silly game about being a bear. Yesterday, despite seemingly happy backers and 78 percent positive reviews on Steam, Bear Simulator’s developer says updating the game any further is “a lost cause.”

I played John Farjay’s Kickstarted bear sim last weekend. While it could certainly use a lot more polish and tweaking, as a first game from an untested developer it’s pretty impressive. Not only did he manage to drum up enough interest in a silly concept to gather a large amount of cash to support development, his first game made it through Steam’s Greenlight program and onto the store proper, where it currently enjoys a “Mostly Positive” review average of 78 percent.

That sounds like a success to me, which is why Farjay’s latest Kickstarter update was such a surprise.

Well the game didn’t have a great reception, has a stigma against it’s name and there’s plenty of other problems so making any updates or going further is basically a lost cause now. Plus not skilled enough to make the game better than it currently is or write better updates than previously.

Was really hoping the Steam release would go well but why would it, should have just gave the game to backers and not bother with Steam.

Also don’t want to deal with the drama anymore. Can’t ignore it because that causes more drama and can’t do anything about it because that causes more drama.

So why all the drama? For one thing, I wasn’t the only person who makes YouTube videos to notice Bear Simulator on Steam. Felix “Pewdiepie” Kjellberg also played the game, and he did not like it at all.

His video review of the game ended with YouTube’s biggest celebrity giving the game developer the finger after attempting to get a Steam refund for it. The vid currently has more than 2.5 million views.

Update: As pointed out by intrepid TAY community reporters, PewDiePie’s video has gone private since the posting of this article.

Despite the widely-viewed video, Bear Simulator still maintains a “Mostly Positive” average on Steam, though it’s not readily evident when browsing through user reviews. Though positive reviews from folks owning the game far outnumber the negative (currently 105 to 30), the negative reviews have received a massive amount of helpful ratings (users don’t have to own the game to mark a negative review as helpful), bringing them to the front of the page.

That’s not to say that the negative reviews are unwarranted. Several of them, including the current highest rated review, come from players identifying themselves as backers of the original Kickstarter project. As Steam member Tickler points out in the review below, Farjay’s Kickstarter communication hasn’t been stellar, and backers experienced long periods of silence over the course of development.

Successful $100,000 Kickstarter Dev Calls It Quits Due To Drama

I’m torn here. On one hand I feel bad for John Farjay, a first-time game developer whose cute idea took off unexpectedly and then had his sloppy but heartfelt work paraded about on about the most massive stage an independent PC game can find itself on. The negative Pewdiepie video isn’t alone in causing the wave of hate that seems to be cascading over Bear Simulator, but it certainly did not help.

Then again, criticism is part of the game development job. Just ask Cliff Bleszinsky.

Today’s PC gaming climate and the Steam platform give small developers more opportunities to get seen, but increased visibility isn’t always a good thing. Farjay put his product out there, and some people didn’t like what they played. Many enjoyed their time with Bear Simulator, but on the internet hate is almost always louder than love, especially when you focus on it.

I reached out to John Farjay for comment on this post, but so far he hasn’t responded. Considering his not wanting to deal with drama stance, I don’t expect him to.

Bear Simulator is not being abandoned. Backers received their game, as promised. Farjay plans a final update to add in a promised Kickstarter backer island into the game and work on any bug fixes or features backers request in the comments section of the update. Some of the stretch goals indicated in the Kickstarter campaign may not be fulfilled, which is a problem, but that’s between the developer and backers.

He wrote that he’s glad that many backers enjoyed the game (though he added “unless you were just being nice”), and thanked them for their positive feedback and encouragement.

The sentence he chose to close the update with is perhaps the most telling.

“Must be doing this PC game dev thing wrong because it is way too hard to stay happy and productive.”

I hope he sticks with the game. I had a bit of fun with it, general messiness and all, and the backer comments under the update are overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Sometimes you just have to power through the hate.

Farjay chimed up later in the comments section, and perhaps he’ll do just that.

Ok, been in a really weird mood for a while now and cannot snap out of it. Has been really annoying and it shows. Need to get back to my original sarcastic self and stop being so complain-y.

Will try to make the next update funny and interesting.

Pluto Might Be Home To Methane-Covered Mountain Peaks

Even though New Horizons swept past Pluto last year, more than half the data that it gleaned from the planet during its flyby is still on the spacecraft, which means that there’s still much that we’ll be learning about the dwarf planet. Case in point: methane snow-covered peaks.

That’s what NASA thinks exists in Pluto’s Cthulhu region: the dark splotch that covers a good part of the southern hemisphere. In the feature’s mountainous region, scientists believe that methane snow has settled in the peaks:

Scientists think this bright material could be predominantly methane that has condensed as ice onto the peaks from Pluto’s atmosphere. “That this material coats only the upper slopes of the peaks suggests methane ice may act like water in Earth’s atmosphere, condensing as frost at high altitude,” said John Stansberry, a New Horizons science team member from Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland. Compositional data from the Ralph/Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) on NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, shown in the right inset, indicates that the location of the bright ice on the mountain peaks correlates almost exactly with the distribution of methane ice, shown in false color as purple.

In addition to possibly spotting clouds on dwarf planet, it’s clear that we’re going to learn a lot of incredible things about Pluto’s atmosphere.

The new Ghostbuster film got a bit of help from an MIT Physicist to imagine just how the new proton packs would be built, and that equations on the whiteboards were accurate.

Dr. James Maxwell consulted on the film, and advised the production on working through just what would be needed for the proton packs. The video is a brief glimpse of how the packs work. Seeing productions consult real scientists is always really great to see, because it helps improve the little details all that much more.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

Boys read comic books. Girls play with dolls. Or at least that’s how it used to be in ancient times. Mattel’s new DC Super Hero Girls dolls blur tired old lines both ways, so I recruited my doll-loving wife to help us take a look at the newly-launched line.

Growing up in much stupider times I used to feel awkward wandering the pinker side of the toy store, but over the past several years that’s changed. Thanks to advances in equine animation and my wife’s ravenous hunger for Mattel’s Monster High dolls (we have somewhere between sixty and eighty in our home currently) I’ve grown more comfortable with toys traditionally marketed towards the female demographic.

This welcome change it attitude has opened up a whole new world of things for me to spend money on at the toy store. LEGO Elves, which I’ve covered for Toy Time previously, feature some really amazing pieces and colors I might have missed otherwise. Maybe I wouldn’t have purchased Popples for my twin sons, one of which carries a transforming plush ball named Lulu everywhere he goes.

And maybe I wouldn’t have been excited enough about Mattel and DC’s comic book cartoon and doll collaboration to hit up Target last week for the launch of the first DC Super Hero Girls dolls. But I did, managing to snag five of the six 12 inch dolls released.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

I hit up several more Target stores in my area on Monday in the hopes of securing Wonder Woman, the star of the line, but to no avail. Thankfully Mattel PR donned its superhero tights (or so I imagine) and got young Diana here before the wife and I started filming.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

The DC Super Hero Girls line is more than just toys. Late last year Warner Bros. and Mattel launched an official website for the property, featuring a series of animated shorts setting the tone and establishing the characters attending Super Hero High.

With graphic novels, apparel and animated shorts both available and forthcoming, DC Super Hero Girls is positioning itself as a strong transmedia brand with an admirable message—anyone can be a hero.

Of course our main concern at Toy Time is right in the name, so let’s get on with that.

For our full impressions of the launch lineup, be sure to watch the video atop the article. My first collaboration with the wife goes about as well as can be expected.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

There are six figures in the initial batch of 12-inch DC Super Hero Girls dolls, as you’ve probably gather from the pictures above. They are Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Wonder Woman and Bumblebee, the only character I had to look up on Wikipedia. Being 12-inch scale they tower above the 10-inch Monster High line, but given that brand’s penchant for mutant creatures I don’t think it’d be too much of a stretch of a child’s imagination.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience
They’re cousins, identical cousins and no they aren’t.

Being larger than Mattel’s other doll lines has its advantages, such as the ability to stand on their own (saving us from having to increase our metal stand collection.)

Rather than pack each box full of lose-able accessories, DC Super Hero Girls dolls come packaged with only the most necessary bits of kit. Bracelets, boots, lassos, hammers and backpacks. They’re ready for action, and action means hair’s going to get mussed up.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

I’m still not sure who Bumblebee is, but my wife and I agree she has the best hair of the lot.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience
My wife, campaigning for cornrows since the dawn of time.

The faces on each of the dolls are quite lovely, striking a balance between the sharper features of Monster High and the rounded baby faces of the Ever After High lines.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience
Ignore the scratch. No idea how that happened. I blame Harley Quinn.

All in all there were only two downsides to the first offerings from the new line. First, the characters with masks (Harley and Batgirl) have their identity-protective devices attached via plastic fasteners that can’t be reattached should a child or collector pull them off.

And then there’s Harley Quinn’s legs.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

Rather than having Harley wear colored leggings, Mattel opted to mold the character’s legs in red and black plastic. I think this is clever and looks cool. Emily hates it, and worries that dressing the character up in different outfits will be hampered by her odd legs. That’s why Harley is hitting her with a hammer.

My favorite doll in the line? Has to be Batgirl.

DC Super Hero Girls Bring Comic Book Toys To A Brand New Audience

The Batwing backpack and the hoodie with the ears? Freaking adorable, and relatively easy to cosplay (don’t worry, I won’t.)

The DC Super Hero Girls line is off to an excellent start, and it’s already blurring the lines between comic book fans and doll lovers. My wife hasn’t read a super hero comic in ages, and she’s in love with these. And I’ve got plans to buy even more dolls on top of the dolls I’ve already committed to buy for her.

Everybody wins?

The capital of Lebanon has been facing gruesome garbage issue since last July, when state authorities closed a major landfill without planning to open a new one. In this photo above, taken Thursday, March 3, 2016, a general view shows packed garbage bags on a street in Jdeideh, east Beirut.

I really cannot imagine how disgusting the stench is in those urban areas where local governments have been forced to shovel garbage onto the margins of roads and rivers, because the lack of proper garbage dumps and waste management. This is one of the worst things that can happen to any large city, and according to an earlier Reuters report, researchers and campaigners warn this is a public health emergency: unmanaged waste threatens the water supply, garbage burnt by the locals fills the air with stinking smoke that contains high levels of carcinogens and other dangerous pollutants.

The situation in Beirut reminds of the Naples garbage crisis, caused by political inefficiency, corruption and mob crimes, aggravated by the lack of modern incinerators and low levels of recycling, and which peaked during the summer of 2008, and largely remained unresolved since then.

This Amazing Fan Film Showcases All The Things We Love About Darth Maul

There is one good thing to come out of Episode I: The Phantom Menace: Darth Maul. This fan film, Darth Maul: Apprentice showcases all of the things that we loved about the red-and-black Sith Lord.

When a team of Jedi Knights stumble upon Maul’s training world, he’s forced to protect his identity and the nature of his training. Fantastic lightsaber battles ensue.

Did we mention that there were some great work with lighsabers here?

This Amazing Fan Film Showcases All The Things We Love About Darth Maul

Beyond just the fighting, this is a really beautifully shot film - the scenery is great, and the team behind the camera knew what they were doing.

There’s been some excellent stories about Maul as well: Michael Reaves’ novel Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter was quite a bit of fun, and the Sith Lord’s appearances in The Clone Wars were surprisingly good.

There’s also a fantastic behind-the-scenes video about how the film was created:

The Damien TV Series Is Giving the Antichrist a Bad Name

The Damien TV Series Is Giving the Antichrist a Bad Name

In A&E’s TV sequel to the classic movie The Omen, Damien is a most reluctant Antichrist. But it turns out watching a guy fretting he may be the spawn of Satan isn’t nearly as entertaining as actually watching the spawn of Satan wreaking havoc upon the world.

No spoilers here, just our first impressions of the pilot episode, which airs tonight.

http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-walking-de...

Created by The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara, Damien imagines that none of The Omen movies happened except for the 1976 original, and fudges the timeline a bit to make the events of that film transpire 25 years ago. In the TV show’s universe, those years were enough to make Damien Thorn forget his troubled first five years on earth, though he does recall the deaths of his (adoptive) father and mother. Now he’s 30, and been pursuing his war-photographer career with the help of his inherited millions.

There’s one big, burning question that pops up immediately, which the pilot doesn’t answer: Why would the shadowy cabal of Damien guardians allow their prince to forget his upbringing, necessitating the soul-searching (or lack-of-soul-searching) that Damien will presumably explore? It takes a creepy encounter with an elderly woman while he’s on assignment in Damascus (on his 30th birthday )to bring him back to a certain earlier birthday party, in which he and all his assembled guests witnessed his beaming nanny fling herself out of a window.

But just because Damien’s been walking around in a fog for 25 years doesn’t mean he’s been completely unprotected or unobserved. A mysterious woman named Ann Rutledge, played by Barbara Hershey, greets Damien with the warm excitement of a doting aunt; an aging scholar, who studied with the archaeologist that Damien’s father meets in the first film drops some hard truth on Damien about his Biblically-ordained future. The Catholic Church has also been keeping tabs on him, of course.

Damien’s main hurdle is going to be convincing us to care about a lead character who—despite being the freakin’ Antichrist—is disappointingly bland. Star Bradley James has none of the swagger that makes Tom Ellis’ Lucifer Morningstar so fun to watch on Lucifer although admittedly, Lucifer is a completely different kind of program. Meanwhile, Damien’s subliminal powers of manipulation, so sinister in the 1976 film, here translate into making an ex-girlfriend/fellow journalist do all of the legwork as he tries to track down the woman from Damascus.

There’s also the fact that Damien will presumably be unable to change his fate. He’s the son of the Devil, after all, poised to be “the greatest tyrant the world has ever seen” and to bring humankind to the brink of apocalypse. Is Damien going to be a show about a budding villain who starts to embrace his evil power, or is it going to be a show about a hunky-yet-emo dude trying desperately to deny his destiny? Or something else entirely? Time will tell, but this early on, it seems like Damien—which does have gorgeous production values, and a hell of a casting coup in Hershey—is going to have to settle on a direction fast if it wants to find an audience.

The Damien TV Series Is Giving the Antichrist a Bad Name

Damien airs tonight on A&E.

Of course we have Tom Holland, and Marissa Tomei’s Aunt May already, but the cast of Sony’s new Spider-Man reboot is largely unknown at this point. We’ve just got confirmation of one more though: Singer/actress Zendaya Coleman has joined the film as what is purportedly the female lead.

Coleman, known mononymously as Zendaya, has been cast as a character known only as “Michelle,” according to Deadline. There’s no other details on the character at all, other than a claim that she is not the romantic interest for Peter Parker—so she’s probably not a new incarnation of Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson. However, there is a Michelle that has been part of Peter’s life in the comics before—most notably Michele Gonzales, who was Peter Parker’s roommate and first appeared during Marc Guggenheim’s Amazing Spider-Man run.

Whether or not Zendaya is playing Michele Gonzales or a completely new character for the film, it’s honestly kind of refreshing to hear some casting news for that isn’t just one of the same group of core Spider-Man characters we’ve seen over and over again.

Watch the Super-Violent Hardcore Henry Trailer and Try Not to Get Motion Sickness

Hardcore Henry is either going to be the most awesome film of all time, or it’s going to make you puke with its POV shaky-cam action. Or both. Basically it’s like a whole movie shot by a cyborg wearing a GoPro. Can you stand it?

The above trailer gives a pretty good sense of what this movie is about. Basically, you’re Henry, a guy who’s lost an arm and a leg—but you get new cybernetic attachments. Then you abseil out of the hospital because your wife has been kidnapped, and you have to go find her. The main point of all this is just to have insane super-violence that feels up close and personal, which sounds just fantastic. I’m in. As long as I don’t need too much Dramamine.

I know I kvetched about Pandemic for having boring POV zombie-killing action—but this movie seems much faster paced, and approximately 1000 percent less taking itself seriously.

Hold on to Your Tail Feathers: Here's the First Image From the New DuckTales
Image: Disney XD

Disney XD has released the first image from its reboot of DuckTales, presenting one of the first cases of a single still getting a song stuck in my head with no prompting. “Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckburg!”

The song even played a role in the tweet Disney PR sent out with the image:

Oooh ooooh indeed. The new show, with a whole new voice cast, is set to debut sometime in 2017. How representative this image is of the actual show, we don’t know—I hope it’s mostly what we’ll get, though, because this looks like some fantastic old-school animation.

Offerings of Blood

Series premiere! This is the “sex-drenched” Bible show that includes sexually explicit scenes that may not be able to be broadcast on ABC—so the online streaming version may actually be racier. Showrunner Chris Brancato told the Television Critics Association that this raw sex and nudity is essential to an accurate depiction of the Biblical story of Samuel 1 and 2, which he called “the world’s first soap opera.” But the show needed major reworking, which is why ABC delayed it from last fall and recast some roles. Now at last, we can see the Bible the way it was always meant to be seen!

Sometimes, letting yourself get too feverishly excited about an upcoming film can backfire. But a letdown doesn’t seem imminent with Jeff Nichols’ upcoming scifi thriller Midnight Special, which has a fantastic cast (Michael Shannon, Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst) and gives off major Spielberg-meets-Carpenter vibes.

New Horror Story Proves Working for Amazon Is More Soul-Crushing Than We Thought

New Horror Story Proves Working for Amazon Is More Soul-Crushing Than We Thought

It’s unspeakably awful to work in an Amazon warehouse. You have to walk between seven and 15 miles a day, enter and exit the buildings through a set of airport-style security scanners that take 30 minutes to get through, and you’re constantly being watched. Now, we have yet a whole new sort of horror story.

Bloomberg just published a chilling report on Amazon’s anti-theft intimidation techniques. We’ve added emphasis:

In an effort to discourage stealing, Amazon has put up flatscreen TVs that display examples of alleged on-the-job theft, say 11 of the company’s current and former warehouse workers and antitheft staff. The alleged offenders aren’t identified by name. Each is represented by a black silhouette stamped with the word “terminated” and accompanied by details such as when they stole, what they stole, how much it was worth, and how they got caught—changing an outbound package’s address, for example, or stuffing merchandise in their socks. Some of the silhouettes are marked “arrested.”

Internal theft is a concern for any major retailer, and given the size of its inventory, it’s no surprise that Amazon take the crime especially seriously. Plus, given the high turnover and low pay of Amazon warehouse employees, it’s easy to see how theft could be a big problem.

But Amazon is using fear and oppression as a way to coerce its employees into working faster, longer, more productive work hours. Make no mistake about it: If you’re caught stealing from Amazon, the company will take legal action against you and embarrass you in front of all your former coworkers.

One former employee likened the fear-mongering experience to prison. Whether it’s fair treatment or not, however, it is technically legal. And as long as that’s the case, it is hard to imagine Amazon using anything but fear to convince its poorly paid employees to obey the rules.

Holy Crap, J.K. Simmons Is Playing Commissioner Gordon in the Justice League Movie

Holy Crap, J.K. Simmons Is Playing Commissioner Gordon in the Justice League Movie

The world might have lost its greatest J. Jonah Jameson, but at least it found itself a Commissioner Gordon that can top Gary Oldman: J.K. Simmons has been cast as Jim Gordon in DC and Warner Bros.’ Justice League duology.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, which is obviously great. Not only is J.K. Simmons an incredible actor, but his past work in superhero movies as Sam Raimi’s Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man has proven that his moustache game is on point. It’s the sort of facial hair fit to carry on the legacy left behind by Gary Oldman, whose mustache served valiantly in the role of Gordon in the Dark Knight trilogy.

But speaking of JJJ, it’s kind of heartbreaking that this means that what little chance there ever was of Simmons reprising his outstandingly well-cast role in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot (something he expressed an interest in recently) is gone for good. It’s the Marvel-verse’s loss, but DC and Warner Bros.’ gain.
