The live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation has found a new writer to overhaul the script. Jonathan herman (Straight Outta Compton) will re-write the script before it goes into production next year.
The film, starring Scarlett Johansson, is slated to be released on March 31, 2017, and is an adaptation of the Japanese anime, which follows members of Public Security Section 9 in the middle of the 21st Century. The cyberpunk anime first appeared as an manga in 1989, and later became an animated film in 1995, while another animated film came out earlier this year in Japan. An animated television show appeared in 2002, with several sequels over the years.
A live-action film has been in the works since 2008, when it was originally acquired by Dreamworks pictures.
