Disney owns both Marvel and ABC, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only channel that can have Marvel TV shows. Fox just announced that it’s working on its own Marvel show, tentatively called Hellfire. Plus another Marvel show is in the pipeline for FX, called Legion.
Hellfire will be set in the late 1960s, and will “follow a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as ‘The Hellfire Club’ – to take over the world.”
Marvel fans are well-aware of the Hellfire Club, as they were major players in the Dark Phoenix saga, and they continue to interact with Wolverine and his buddies. We also met them in X-Men: First Class.
You’ve heard of all the people behind the scenes too. Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg, all of whom have worked on multiple X-Men movies, are executive producing along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.
The showrunners will be Evan Katz, best known for his work on 24, and Manny Coto, who not only worked on 24 but also Star Trek Enterprise and Odyssey 5. They co-created the show with Star Trek Beyond writers Patrick McKay and JD Payne. McKay and Payne will write the pilot.
Then over on FX is Legion. It’s “the story of David Haller: Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real.”
In the comics, Legion is the son of Professor Xavier, and he plays a huge role in the Age of X crossover.
Donner, Singer, Kinberg and Loeb are also executive producing Legion, along with Noah Hawley and John Cameron, who work on the amazing Fargo. Hawley is writing the pilot.
Because these are X-Men-themed shows, they will have no bearing with the ABC or Netflix Marvel shows. What could be interesting, though, is if these new shows manage to cross over with the upcoming X-Universe movies, like X-Men Apocalypse, The Wolverine 2, Gambit, Deadpool and others.
