Who are Rey’s parents? It’s probably the biggest mystery to come out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Basically everyone’s a suspect—but now, we can chop a huge number of people off the list: every single character in The Force Awakens.
At a discussion as part of the Tribeca Film Festival, J.J. Abrams was asked by a fan who Rey’s parents are. His answer, which you can see below, starts with the new information that her parents are not in The Force Awakens.
So neither Han, Leia, Luke, or Snoke have any tie to the character, nor anyone else in the movie. Who do you think it is?
Update: After this story made news, J.J. Abrams clarified his comments to Entertainment Weekly. “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world,” the director said. Which is almost an odder statement. We know she didn’t discover them in The Force Awakens. We saw the movie. That’s why the question is a question at all. Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell whether or not he’s covering an honest slip up or being truthful. You can never quite tell when it comes to the Master of the Mystery Box.
