It’s turning out to be a very good day
The Goon movie has been bandied about since 2012, when David Fincher signed on to produce, and the then-little-known Tim Miller and Jeff Fowler aboard as co-directors. As you can see from the excellent proof-of-concept trailer above (with voice work from Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti as Goon and Frankie, respectively), The Goon is (or should be) solidly R-rated, and four years ago studios balked at the-unheard-of idea of an R-rated movie based on a comic book (especially a CG one).
This brings us to today, shortly after an R-rated movie based on a comic book made approximately a jillion dollars. Miller told Collider than suddenly, studios are interested:
“We haven’t taken it back out yet, but I can honestly say, without saying who, there has been a number of calls now—for years it didn’t happen—saying, ‘Hey we hear you have this Goon project. When can we see it? What can we see?’ Jeff and I re-recorded some V.O. for the animatic last week, we’re doing some more week after next with a very prominent movie star. We know we’ve got a really good shot here and we wanna put our best foot forward.”
Go figure!
