This Week's TV: A Ton of New Shows, But Only One of Them is Worth Your Time

It’s officially the start of fall TV season, and seven new shows are launching. But only one of them has bowled us over. Plus Gotham is back, and nuttier than ever. And how will the Doctor save Clara from the Daleks? Plus, David Tennant as the Fugitoid! All this and more, on This Week’s TV!

Tonight:

Gravity Falls (8PM, DISNEY XD)

“Grunkle Stan takes the kids with him on a road-trip to sabotage all the other tourist traps in Oregon.”

Bedrock City is an historic landmark!

Gotham (8PM, FOX)

“Penguin is King of Gotham and after a shakeup at the GCPD, Detective James Gordon’s moral compass wavers, as he seeks help from Penguin. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne continues to explore the secrets from his father’s office, while GOTHAM newcomers Theo Galavan (James Frain) and his sister, Tabitha (Jessica Lucas), make friends with some unlikely allies, a group of dangerous inmates from Arkham in the all-new “Rise of the Villains: Damned If You Do...”

They missed an opportunity by not 3-D printing this sculpt at Comic-Con...

Minority Report (9PM, FOX)

Series premiere—and it already knows if you’re going to watch! We saw a big chunk of this show, which is a sequel to the Steven Spielberg movie, at Comic-Con, and were not impressed with its goofy dystopia. Let’s hope this show improves after a few episodes.

Scorpion (9PM, CBS)

“Satellite of Love” - The new Director of Homeland Security reunites the team when a nuclear powered Russian satellite is knocked out of orbit and must be diverted before it detonates over Southern California.”

Season premiere—and we can’t wait to see what kind of crazy USB-cable car stunts they’ll do this time around.

Blindspot (10PM, NBC)

Series premiere! The final word on the “heavily tattooed amnesiac” genre. This is another one that we saw at Comic-Con, and we found the pilot somewhat bland and predictable.

Tuesday:

Sci-fi Movie Marathon (TCM, 6AM)

An all-day marathon that kicks off with Metropolis (1927) and ends with Westworld! Films include: The Tin Man, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, The Invisible Boy, Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy & 2001: A Space Odyssey!

The Muppets (8PM, ABC)

“Miss Piggy is furious that Kermit booked Elizabeth Banks as a guest on her late night talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear meets his girlfriend’s parents, and Grammy Award-winning rock band Imagine Dragons performs their new single “Roots,” on the season premiere of “The Muppets.”

We didn’t see this one at Comic-Con, but we’ve seen it since then, and... it’s sort of weird. It’s very much midlife crisis humor, if that makes any sense.

Scream Queens (8PM, FOX)

“The girls of Kappa House are dying for new pledges. Kappa House, the most sought-after sorority for pledges, is ruled with an iron fist (in a pink glove) by Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts, “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” “Scream 4”). But when anti-Kappa DEAN CATHY MUNSCH (Jamie Lee Curtis, “Halloween,” “A Fish Called Wanda,” “True Lies”) decrees that sorority pledging must be open to all students, and not just the school’s silver-spooned elite, all hell is about to break loose, as a devil-clad killer begins wreaking havoc across the campus in the all-new “Pilot/Hell Week” special two-hour series premiere!”

Which “scream queens” would you like to see make a guest appearance? I like Barbara Steele, Lesleh Donaldson, and Jill Schoelen. We also saw this one at Comic Con, and Jamie Lee Curtis is by far the best thing about it.

Face Off (9PM, SYFY)

The artists must create their own version of the four horsemen – or horsewomen—of the apocalypse!

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series (9PM, El Rey)

¡Dios mío! Serpiente señora!

Limitless (10PM, CBS)

“Brian Finch’s life takes an extraordinary turn when he uses a mysterious drug, NZT, that allows him to access his full brain capacity. However, when an NZT-related murder lands Brian on the FBI’s radar, he uses the drug in an attempt to stay ahead of the authorities long enough to clear his name, on the series premiere of LIMITLESS”

And here it is—the new show that is most worth your time. We were blown away by the pilot of this show, which is based on a movie that was better than anybody expected.

The Bastard Executioner (10PM, FX)

“When an unlikely suspect is charged with treason, Wilkin must carry out his duties as the new executioner.”

This looks like an “execution-of-the-week” episode instead of a “mythology” episode.

Wednesday:

The Thundermans (5PM, NICKELODEON)

This episode is called, “Are you Afraid of the Park?” Still have my Midnight Society membership card…

South Park/Moonbeam City (10PM, COMEDY)

No information on either on these yet…

Thursday:

Steven Universe (5:30PM, CARTOON)

Teen Titans Go! (6PM, CARTOON)

“Robin tries to teach the Titans valuable life lessons by reading them fairy tales, but the others co-opt his stories and spin them into their own twisted yarns.”

Heroes Reborn (8 PM, NBC)

The two-hour series premiere of this miniseries sequel to NBC’s once-beloved show about superpowered mutants. Here’s how NBC describes it:

A year ago, a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas, left the city decimated. Blamed for the tragic event, those with extraordinary abilities are in hiding or on the run from those with nefarious motives. Two such vigilantes include Luke (Zachary Levi, “Chuck”) and Joanne (Judith Shekoni, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2”), who are seeking to avenge a tragic loss. Noah Bennet, aka H.R.G. (Jack Coleman, “Heroes”), has gone off the grid but conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski, “A to Z”) finds him and opens his eyes to the truth behind the Odessa tragedy. While in hiding, some are discovering their newfound skills. Awkward teen Tommy (Robbie Kay, “Once Upon a Time”) just wants to be normal and win the girl of his dreams, Emily (Gatlin Green, “Criminal Minds”), but normalcy is virtually impossible after learning of a new ability that terrifies him. Coming from a very sheltered upbringing, a bold and ethereal teenager, Malina (Danika Yarosh, “Shameless”), has been told she is destined for greatness. In Tokyo, a quiet and unique young woman, Miko (Kiki Sukezane, “Death Yankee 3”), is trying to track down her missing father while hiding an extraordinary secret that will make her a force to be reckoned with. Elsewhere, a different type of hero is emerging through former soldier Carlos (Ryan Guzman, “The Boy Next Door”). Meanwhile, Erica (Rya Kihlstedt, “Masters of Sex”), the head of the highly successful tech conglomerate Renautas, has an agenda of her own. For better or for worse, some are fated to cross paths with assorted heroes of the past, including Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg), Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) and the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis), among others. Yet, together, their ultimate destiny is nothing less than saving the world and mankind.

Dominion (10PM, SYFY)

Zephaniah 1:15: That day will be a day of wrath— a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness—

Geeks Who Drink (11PM, SYFY)

Tricia Helfer takes on Kevin Weisman (no contest).

Friday:

Friday the 13th Marathon (6AM, SYFY)

Spongebob Squarepants (7:30, NICK)

Luckily, Spongebob is on afterward to clean up the mess. It’s an episode about a company picnic…

Black Jesus (11PM, CARTOON)

Continuum (11PM, SYFY)

Abandoned factories are highly sought-after amongst the criminal breed.
