If Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad are any indication, the DC Cinematic Universe is going to be much darker and grimmer than Marvel’s. But a new rumor suggests it’ll eventually get a big dash of fun and color, thanks to the misfit pairing of Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.
The rumor, which originated at The Tracking Board, says the more comical heroes will be getting a “buddy cop” type superhero movie with Flash and Arrow executive producer Greg Berlanti directing. Heroic Hollywood added that Zak Penn, writer of X2, is being eyed as a writer. The film would fit into the universe that’ll features Ben Affleck’s Batman, Henry Cavill’s Superman, Jared Leto’s Joker and others.
Now, remember this is a rumor. Berlanti is a very busy guy, with several TV shows on the air in addition to Flash and Arrow. Who knows when - or if - he could break off to make a movie. There’s also the fact the characters were once rumored to show up along with the DC TV heroes, but it never happened. One possible reason for that? Maybe (and this is pure speculation) Berlanti thought twice about it when he heard Warner Bros. was up for making a theatrical movie.
Bringing in these potentially diverse, funny characters would be a nice change of pace to what - as it stands - looks like a pretty downbeat universe. Batman is brooding, the Suicide Squad looks gritty, and Aquaman isn’t wearing orange tights. Green Lantern Corps or The Flash could be “fun,” depending on the filmmaker—but Booster Gold and Blue Beetle? That’s a guarantee, if it’s true.
There’s also the question, if this is true, when would this movie happen? The DC slate is pretty stacked at the moment, with 10 announced films through 2020 plus at least one Batman movie in that time and maybe even Man of Steel 2. Maybe Booster and Beetle are being eyed for a possible phase two?
