Stephen King and TV haven’t always had the best relationship. In fact, the track record of adapting the author’s work to the small screen is, overall, pretty bad. Sure there’s a good miniseries here and there—but for the most part it’s been a dismal line-up. Now a new King story is coming to TV: The Mist.
The Wrap reports The Mist is being developed for television by Dimension Television (Scream) and Danish writer Christian Torpe. King has given his blessing to the production but there isn’t yet a channel or streaming service attached.
Most people probably know The Mist from the underrated 2007 film from director Frank Darabont. However the story originated as a King novella, first in a collection called Dark Forces, then in King’s Skeleton Crew.
The Mist is about how a group of citizens react when—you guessed it—a mysterious mist takes over their town, filled with horrible monsters. Both the movie and novella mostly take place in a isolated supermarket but the TV show will only use that as inspiration, and will have a larger scope.
“The terror and drama in Stephen King‘s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, in a statement. “With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.”
Well, we hope so. Maybe this will be the series that breaks King’s television curse.
