This Isn't a Picture of a Log.

That’s just what the wasps want you to think.

What we actually have here is an Epinona wasp’s nest built in the tree canopy of the Amazon rainforest. Not content to merely attack anyone who gets too close to their home with stings, these wasps also attack with modern art. After they’ve built their nests, they chew up and spit up different plants in various shades of browns and paste them all over the outer walls to mimic the wood grain pattern of the tree it’s stationed in.

This particular nest now lives in the American Museum of Natural History’s wasp collection, alongside some other terrifying examples of wasp camouflage.
