I will give Disney this: at least there are actually other books to base this on. I will give them literally nothing else.
Right, let’s get right down to the details: Disney is making a sequel to Mary Poppins because, why the fuck not at this point. It’ll take place twenty years after the original Mary Poppins, so I guess that’ll explain why she’s a completely different person. It’ll draw on Poppins books that haven’t ever made it to the big screen.
In charge are the Into the Woods team of director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt. Oh. Good. That adaptation definitely understood the soul of the work. And in the writing seats are Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) for songs and score and David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi) to write the screenplay.
It does not matter if this is good. It doesn’t. By the time this movie comes out in 2148 or whatever, we will have seen so many of these rebooted Disney classics that no one will care. We’re going to be telling our grandchildren about the good old days, when Disney made original movies. And also about the days when Disney didn’t own every single movie franchise.
