Coates included Stelfreeze’s art in a short post discussing his approach to comics writing and Black Panther specifically, which has a few interesting details about his process—but as you can also see in the art above, it reveals a new power granted to T’Challa by his Vibranium-weaved supersuit:
After talking back and forth we came up with some new ideas for how T’Challa’s famed Vibranium-weave suit might work — in this case, absorbing kinetic energy and allowing him to fire that energy back out in short energy bursts. “Energy bursts” almost gets it wrong — think ‘force-push’ not ‘optic blast.’ All the old powers are there—enhanced senses, agility, peak-human strength etc. But this idea (and others) really came out of Brian’s thought — not just on the suit — but on the properties of Vibranium itself.
The hyper-intelligent, deadly combatant king of Wakanda can now basically force push people who attack him? Awesome.
The whole piece is a short but really interesting insight into how Coates, one of the most prolific journalists in the business right now, is approaching his first foray into comics. Unfortunately, it just leaves us yearning even harder for Black Panther’s new comic.
Black Panther #1 is available in early 2016.
